my dad's se-r was mysteriously running slow. he had an exhaust system and intake. we didn't know why. well, at the dyno day today, my dad asked to have his timing changed. i thought this could be some of the problem, but not all. well, when we figured out the timing of my dad's car as it sat, it was at a poor 10 degrees. poor, poor, poor! well, we decided to make this car a rolling dyno test for timing.

the first dyno we made of the car at 10 degrees showed a whopping 114hp at the wheels. that's horrible considering the car had a k&n filtercharger and a mandrel bent exhaust system going through a magnaflow straight-through muffler. when we adjusted the timing to 18 degrees (the max we could get the car to), the car yielded 122hp to the wheels! that's an 8 horsepower difference!

don't believe me, see for yourself:

That's hard to argue with.

2 things I notice:
The dyno sheet says 19 degrees, so was it 18 or 19?
The plot stops at ~7300 rpms. I assume that's a result of the stock tach being a bit optimistic?

it says 19 degrees, but the highest we could get it was 18 degrees.

yeah, the dyno's tach was off 200rpm consistantly on each car that dynoed, so the car actually hit 7500rpm, the dyno just didn't think so.

holy polygraph!!!! :D

Looks like you "smooth-ed" those lines out some.
But yeah, bro, from 10 to 18 is a big difference!!
Im glad he got some good #'s!!

The dyno's tach is right on the money, its our tachs that are off. My shift light is wired directly to the - side of the coil and set at 7000rpm. It doesn't turn on till 7400-7500rpm, that was verified on the dyno. My car dynoed 123fwhp/119fwtq with 19* timign and intake.

I believe in the whole timing issue also, but your test is flawed. First off, any SR20 car will show a loss with 10 deg timing. That's 5 deg below what it should be. If you would have done a run at 15deg, you would have seen a difference too. I'm not slamming you, just saying that is you state "we out the timing at 18 deg, and got 8hp", some people will believe that there is a 8hp gain from 15deg to 18deg. Did Brad have his S3s in?

okay, thanks eric, i think. yes, brad had his s3's in and put down like 146 to the wheels. he needs an exhaust system and i bet it'd go up a decent chunk.

Grr, thats what I was gana say eric. We dynoed a stock SE-R at 15 and 17 and there was about a 2 hp loss throughout the powerband going from 15 to 17, but the 17 was the second run, and dont u usually lose hp after the first run? oh well, whatever.
