i installed 91-93 cams in my 94 se-r classic. install went ok. the problem arised when i started the car. first of all, the car can't idle steadily. the tach needle keeps dropping below 500 rpm, then jump to around 1000 and then drop again. it'd do this continuously until the car stalls. also tried revving the car a little but the throttle is a bit hesitant and stutters if i try to hold it at a constant rpm. tried driving it and the car won't pull past 3000 rpm. anyways, i have my suspicion that it may be ignition timing and base idle setting problem, but i haven't had a chance to get my hands on a timing light yet. also, base idle is a bit hard to set with the car stalling occasionally. anyways, is there anything else i could be forgetting/missing with the install? any and all help would be appreciated! thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like you have one of the cam's off a tooth.Did you use a fsm and count the links between the timin marks? It'll run like ass just one thooth off:(

i bet its the timing, my timing was really off and it would stall

can bad timing cause the throttle to be THAT off? the car barely idles and can't climb past 3000 when driven. i will definitely check the timing ***...just need to get my hands on a timing light.

did you replace both cams or just the intake cam? If you replaced both cams check all your connections at the distributor and then check your ignition timing. If the ignition timing is way off your idle will be weird.
Check all your MAF connections also. Reset the ECU too.

james vick, thanks for the sage advice. there was 22 rollers as opposed to 20 rollers between the two markers on the sprockets!!! but of course, i shifted the chain in the wrong direction so i couldn't get the timing below 25 degrees. wonderful....so after another couple hours of disassembling and correcting the problem, i got the car to run, smoothly at that! so thanks for your and everyone else's help! if there's a lesson to be learned from my experience, that is to follow the directions METICULOUSLY!

john,
got your packet, but that was when i was already in too deep. i should have read it BEFORE i installed the cam, not WHILE i was installing.
anyways, the car is running, but i don't quite feel the noticeable pull people talk about. is it b/c the ecu is adjusting? could it be timing? (i have it around 16 degrees right now) or did i just screw it up? =) also, is there suppose to be sort of a dead spot b/w 3500-4000? when i'm cruising at 75mph on the highway, the car doesn't seem to pick up as quick as the '94+ cams. weird....again, any help/comment will be greatly appreciated!

That is exactly what happened to me, not trying to be an ass or anything but next time before you try a new project check the search function and see what has been done in the past.
