When I picked up my torque plate, the guy asked what project I was working on. I told him a 500HP+ turbo four cylinder. He raised his eyebrow of course, but seemed interested. We discussed some of the strengths and weaknesses of the SR20. The number one thing I told him was the third gear problem. He smiled, and proceeded to tell me that he knows of a company he works with quite often who can build a stronger gear and numerically change the specific third gear ratio or the entire gear set and final drive. How much? Don't know. I have to disassemble my spare tranny and give the third gear set. I will keep you updated.

Very interesting. A couple of my gears are messed up, so keep us informed and if the price is right I might be interested.

If he's making custom gear sets maybe he's able to make dog-engagement.

If you're actually running 500hp, you'll go thru synchros like nothing - you might want to consider straight cut gears with dog rings.

I've been half-assed looking around either for a dog box or gear set but with no luck.

If you end up exploring this option, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

How about Supra manual trans's that take 800 hp and don't have problems? I wonder if their synchros are made of a better material, or could having "triple cone synchros" make a difference(ie, number of synchros). I'm not trying to start a fight, I'm just wondering if some transmissions that have synchros seem to live fine with extreme levels of power, why could not ours? Especially if you have the case re-welded and a new gear set made of a stronger material. Since synchros don't seen to be an regular problem with our transmissions, just case and 3rd gear.
