: Can our cars tow things?
Ok, I've seen the little hitches that are sold for cars before. I actually had a HB Civic with one on it. It came with it. Never tried towing anything though. So my question is, can we actually tow things with our cars? I've been toying with the idea of getting a motorcycle, but I'd like to get a little trailor for it to pull it behind my car when I'm going places. TIA
98sr20ve 03-25-2002, 10:54 AM I towed a piano and stuff (about 1000-1200lbs) including trailer with a 95 200sx (GA16 engine) from Iowa to Virginia. Slow but no problems. Kept the car another 45K before traded in. I have a trailer that wieghs 200lbs and I tow 1000lbs total wieght a couple times a year. Mostly mulch and stuff. This is with my 98 Sentra Se. To my knowledge all of our cars are rated to tow 1000 lbs as per the Owners Manual. If you need a light trailer (which you do because trailer wieght counts as part of the total weight) check out Northern. Mine is 94 inches long and folds up into the garage against a wall. It's very nice.

MEclassic 03-25-2002, 11:04 AM You can tow with anything - I have towed a 4x8 trailer behind my previous car, a 1989 Mercury Tracer (82 furious horses). I am pretty sure Larry Macleod tows a Tire Trailer all over the country to national autocrosses in his B14. And I also think he's going to be towing an F125 kart with it this year. Are there any towing guidelines in the owners' manual?

Andy92RubyClassic 03-25-2002, 02:19 PM if you car is not setup with a hitch it's more of a pia than you think.
those tow bar things/w hitch cost like $200 to get installed on my dad's intrepid from U haul. wiring etc.. what a pain. then you gotta buy or rent a trailer..
i have a motorcycle.. i just ride places. why would want to transport it places anyway? loading and unloading isn't fun either.. $20 for straps etc..

That $200 dollar trailer was the best thing I have bought in my entire life. It's nearly 8 feet long. Carrys trash, furniture, mulch, Bikes, Camping gear, lumber, almost anything under 1000 lbs. The hitch is going to cost 180 or so but install it yourself and your done. Wiring, 20 bucks. My sentra is better then a compact truck in many respects with that $200 trailer.

aztecred92 03-25-2002, 05:10 PM The short answer is yes.
For a long hairy tale, click here (http://www.se-r-list.org/archives/2000/2000-08/frm00362.html)
If that link doesn't work, do a search for "Re: Towing (long hairy tale)" on the SE-R Mailing List (www.se-r-list.org).

Well I plan on installing it myself as well as the wiring. And I'd much rather take my car for the trip instead of the bike. I'm not planning on riding the bike long distances. Street bikes aren't exactly notorious for the comfort factor. And I wouldn't mind having the trailor for small things. Like 98sr20de mentioned. Not to mention how pimp it would look me pulling into a car show towing a phat ass bike behind my car.. Same paint scheme, and rims on the trailor....
SmoothDaddyFig 03-25-2002, 11:08 PM I wanna tow a nice jet ski on mine.
Theres a white SE-R in Tampa that tows a jet ski. It looks Pimp-A-Rific!!!

i used to think the same thing until i realized i bought the bike to ride it.. having two wheels and an engine the thing is meant to be ridden not towed by a compact car. mine's a 350cc on/off road and i've done long trips. get a good pack and jacket. the mpg's are nice too.
I did plenty of towing with my SE-R.
I have a 4x6 enclosed utility trailer that I used to use to tow my 100cc racing kart along with spares including wheels, tires, engines, ballast, etc. With the SE-R you barely knew it was there.
Hell, I used to tow a double wide snowmobile trailer with a home made enclosure with my CRX when I first got my kart.
98sr20ve 03-27-2002, 09:34 AM I mentioned before that our cars are rated to tow 1000 pounds. So is the maxima/altima. My wife's passat with a v6 and 5 speed isn't even rated to tow officially fron VW. Most manufacures don't want to recommend towing for fear of increased warranty and liability issues from accidents due to trailers flipping or swaying.
Bringing up an old topic....
I'm looking to put a hitch on my '92 SE-R to haul my motorcycle.
The purpose of towing the bike is to go to the track. Riding the bike to the track is a bad omen :)
Anybody have any advice on hitches? Where to get them, if it makes a difference which one, etc?
Shawn B 08-20-2005, 05:39 AM U-haul. Any place that sells aftermarket stuff for trucks. We've got a "Yee Haw Ever Thin Fer Yer Pick-em Up Truck Joint" here in Houston on North Shepherd. I would assume that you might google it up? speedracerUT suggested that in another thread and I was like...duh, why didn't I think of that? LOL.
Further, I just wanted to say, you rock. You obviously searched and found a thread. Bravo.
You are a gentlemen, a scholar, and a fine boon to our SR20Forum.
A compliment I use rarely. (You listenin' Monty?)
