Check your battery too. Alternaters tend to go quickly if you have a bad or low battery since they are constantly trying to charge it at full power.

i might be the connecters to the battery. my negative terminal gets lose and that messes up the charge when i start

Also check for anything leaking on the alternator. Mine acted funny after a little antifreeze driped on it from a leaky resevoir. Thankfully I didnt have to replace it, just wait for it to dry out.

Alright yall listen to this. My car started acting funny the other day. Somtimes not starting unless I jumped it. I tried to jump start it the other day though and it would not even turn over. I turned the key and got nothing (this was with a jump. So after getting it back to my house and it sitting over night it started up with out needing a jump at all. So Im wondering if the alternator was dead wouldnt the car still turn over?? and if it was DIE-ING(sp) would I have these symtoms also? Or does it sound like the starter is going also?

I think it can be sometimes appropriate to reopen a thread then to open a new one. Not that this thread thread is really that interesting though ....

I ran into a short a couple of weeks ago at the alternator terminals. When I attempted to start the car, instead of starting I heard clicking relays under the dash.

In looking about the forum on the issue, I ran into this one that amused me because it discribed the same symptom where the end result was a bad alternator.

I had not thought a bad alternator could keep a car with a decent battery from starting.

JOHNNY! long time no talk bro! its the STARTER. wanna fiund out for sure? get a long crowbar. have someone turn the key over...when it isnt starting for you. and hit the starter with the crowbarr. she will start right up. its a bad spot in the starter. mine used to do it. it would start fine. then be shitty and not make a sound at all. then, id let it cool off and come back out and itd start right up. theyre funny like that. but if u do end up needing to replace it...PLEASE get the mitsubishi one. there are two...mitsu. and hitatchi. the hitatchi ones suck and get the se-r drag...that high pitched sound that alot of se-r's have. anyways, hope i helped. if you need help changing ur starter...call me ill drive down and help ya! it wouldnt hurt to get the alt. and batt. tested too. take it to advance auto..theyll do it free :)

the best way to check to see if your alternator is still good, is 1. start your car, leave it running 2. unplug your + cable from the battery, if your car is still running then your alternator is good, if it dies, your alternator is bad, because if the alternator is good it should be holding a charge and keep the car running. My uncle told me this trick, he is a machanic. Give it a try.

might try and push start it a few times, that could fix the starter (worked for me on a escort)

Yeah, that and washing the engine. Make sure you cover the alternator when hosing the motor down. I killed a few alternators that way. Luckly I do them myself. I just don't know how I will get to the pivot bolt if I get a DET manifold.

Het thanks alot for the help. Aye 92nx2k I took the car to advanced auto and the guy said that it was the alternator. The machine showed that the alti was putting out over 100amps of current when it is a stock 80 amp max alti so that make me think its the alti. Hey why would hitting the starter make it start right up?? just wondering. Yeah it has been a long time holla at me later!!

Okay it was the starter. But I still think my alternator is making my voltage fluctuate though. Im going to do that test and see if it cuts off or not. Thanks guys
