: Holy Retarded Timing Batman!

So I recently did a jdm highport swap on my nx. I checked my timing today for good measure, and found my timing retarded almost to the furthest back mark (10* maybe!!!). Keep in mind, even with this timing retard, this new engine felt 25% stronger than my old one. Now imagine my surprise when I set it to 17 degrees.... Yeah my eyes were the size of saucers. I am a happy jdm sr20de owner to say the least.

Currently I am running a silencer in my muffler since its so damn loud,(its a Bomz Type R... Before you laugh I was 16) (the damn silencer reduces down to maybe 1.25"!!!!) IM sure this saps quite a bit of power!! As soon as I get a SSAC header I will be installing some thrush resonators (as many as I can) and Hopefully it will be quiet enough to run without the damn silencer. If not, hello new muffler! I cant imagine how much more power is waiting to be released without that silencer! Anyone have any idea how much hp im killing running that silencer? Btw, Im running 2.25" custom exhaust from flexpipe back with the usdm exhasut manifold currently.

Thanks!!!

so it was timing all along, huh?

Oh no not all along! The bad Knock sesor was really killing my power initially. It literally felt I had a ga16 running on two cylinders. (the knock sensor was pulling back sick amounts of timing). I swapped that out and my engine felt 25% stronger than my OLD engine ever had. THEN I fixed the timing and SHAZAM hello torque and lowend response!

I love sr20's. Especially newish jdm ones...:biggthump

nice. i haven't checked your thread in a little while now. good to hear you got everything working. i think my timing may be a little on the retarded side too. i need to get a light on it and check it out.

im doing some searcjing .. and seem to find my problems may be a bad knockw sensor... my timing i just cant get right. I set it in timing mode and cant get it to idle... well it idles at 1500 rpm's. it was at well maybe 10 degree's past the marks.i was like wow... so i took it down to 16ish degree's shut the car off plugged the tps in. started it up idles right at 850-900 . I took a look at the timeing and it was at 5 degree's at idle. I was stunned. I took it for a ride and felt a huge lose in power. plus it backfires like crazy when im on it between shifts. to add to the story befor i set it in timeing mode... it was timed right at 16* but in timing mode with tps unplugged the timing also jumped all around +3* minus -4* ... it was very irradic. (my spelling sucks. but i try)

Nope the nock sensor isnt your problem. Your idle has to be at 850ish or a bit less to set the timing correctly. If your idle is too high it will set the timing too advnced, too low and it will retard it too much. If your timing was jumping around, it wasnt in timing mode. Try the revving procedure again. When it jumps around thats the sure sign that its not in timing mode. The computer adds/subtracts a few degrees timing sporadically when its not in timing mode.

My car had ziltch power and was backfiring with the retarted timing as well. Redo the timing mode procedure and make sure the timing stays steady. Then set it to what you want (I set it at 17-18). Its a HUGE differance!!

thanks will def try to set it again after I'm done installing the clutch. the flywheel is at the resurface shop.... that sounds like my problem... i just couldnt get it into timing mode... i know it was warm enough. The fans would keep kicking on. reved to 2000 a couple of time then i tryed racing it a lil. nothing...

un plug the fans and make sure everything electrical is shut off in the car. that should make it a bit easier to get into timing mode.

just make sure you remember to plug the fans back in afterwards... :)

cool thanks for the tip.... yes no fans would be no fun, esp if it blew up and i had no motor. haha
