anyone here know of a local shop that can do some work for me? obviously i can open the phone book and find a shop that way, but i am asking around for first hand experience. i have some cash set aside, and the only thing holding me back right now from starting to rebuild is the machining.

if there isnt anyone with first hand experience.....what do i need to know, or look for in finding a good machine shop? this is a first for me and i am taking my time! i've been sitting on my motor (in pieces) for long enough, time to start putting it back together!!!

R&R Machine in Derry. My friend just got a Bluebird block and head cleaned up there. They are right off 28, across from a fireworks place. They do big race motors for drag cars and have a couple engine dynos.

R&R machine in Londonderry, NH.The phone # is 434-0579. What kind of work are you looking to have done?

I was the one who sent the head and block to them. They did a great job cleaning it up and honing out the cylinders. My bill for everything was $230. They degreased the block (unplugged all the oil galleys & cleaned them/then tanked it in an aluminum cleaning solution), beaded the head and then also tanked it to get all the oil galleys cleaned out.

If your looking to get the block bored out you might need to supply them with a plate or either that have them make one for you. From talking to them I figure if you have the $$ they can pretty much do anything you can think of. They have also been in the business for @ 20 years.

Edit: You didn't find any info on them because they don't advertise. The guy I talked to says they do so much work as it is they woulden't be able to take on anything additional with further advertisement. :)

They perform all machining work on site. Line boring, boring and honing, crank grinding, surfacing, valve jobs, balancing, everything. This is a small shop, 3 men, two of which are the owner’s. When you have work done at Manchester Engine Rebuilders, its done by a skilled and experienced machinist, not a $10/hr pimple faced kid that just graduated from trade school.

This is not a race engine shop, they will assemble engines but they specialize in machine work. In fact this shop actually does the machine work for some of the area race engine builders.

I have been using Manchester Engine Rebuilders for 20 years. They did all the machine work on the engine I used to win the 2005 New England Road Racing Championship in GT3.

If you call, tell them Dave Patten recommended them. These guys are the best in my book.

Good info, Dave! Do you have a local coater you have done business with? I'm looking for powder coating specifically, but would love to find a place that does ceramic coating and/or anodizing as well.

head: port&polish, possibly have them assemble the head as well(undecided)

mike: when they clean everything in the "tank" solution, is it possible to have them clean other parts as well? i've never even been inside a machine shop so i am clueless to how they perform this task. is it like they put a pile of parts in a basket then dip it? or what? i dont know:rolleyes:

Thanks.. more to come ;)! They didn't do any porting or anything (I plan on cleaning up the casting marks a little bit myself). They just beaded it and dunked it in the cleaning tank. I did check out some of the head work they do when I picked up my stuff and it looks good.

mike, i was wondering what time of year you had your work done? i contacted r+r and they said they'd do the maching work on the block, but had no time this time of year to get into port and polishing......also on the second pic posted here, the first "after" pic, what are the two plugs between the spark plug holes? the hex head diff plug lookin plugs......

I had my work done about a month ago. They seem busy every time I go to pick stuff up. You have to figure its the begining of the race season for the northeast so they are probably getting alot of orders. I only had them clean my parts and hone my block.. I didn't ask them about porting or anything like that.

The plugs in the pic your talking about are the coolant passage plugs I think.. When they cleaned up my stuff they pulled them all out and re-inserted them loctite and all.

On a side note I'm going to head up to pick up my pistons this Thursday. I'll ask them how busniess is going/if they are really that swamped to the point of not taking orders.

Ok good news.. bad news.

Good: R&R has a flow bench and they do p&p. :)
Bad: They are booked up until at least the end of fall :( It’s a small shop like I mentioned earlier and they only have @ three people working there.

Other than that I got my pistons back from them and they look freakin awesome! Pics to be posted later ;) and I asked about balancing and the guy told me it usually runs around $225 but it all depends on the time it takes.
