Conventional wisdom in the SE-R community says to go no bigger than 2.25 inches for a bolt on NA sr20de. A 3 inch exhaust is what a lot of the turbo guys use.

Thats right.
3 is way too much for N/A.

Go Pacesetter if you have no $$$$.
Go HS if you have the dough.

Go with the Courtesy cat-back in 2.25 or 2.5 in. diameter. I have the 2.5 in diameter with a few bolt-ons and I LOVE it. The sound is bad-ass!

Bill Luton, president of Izuzuperformance.com, wrote to Sport Compact Car magazine (May 2002) to disagree with a generalization that Mike Kojima made in his Nov. 2001 article, "Build your own exhaust". According to his research, 1.5 to 2.5 liter N/A cars could benefit from a 2.5 exhaust.

After aquiring a hole in my stock exhaust system I went with
2.25
I felt a little loss in power on bottom end
MY track times stayed consistant.
If I was to do it all over again I would go with 2" Madrel bent.

How big is our stock exhaust? Is that in I.D. or O.D.?

Something I didn't see mentioned, is if the exhaust piping will be mandrel bent or not. I don't know for sure, but 2.25" mandrel bent system will probably flow better than a 3" crush bent system. Someone else can probably answer that, but I would think that a 2.5" mandrel bent system would probably be adequate for a N/A car. That way you shouldn't run into clearance issues w/ a 3".

Just my thoughts,
