My brakes are sqealing really bad lately. All of my pads are more than good but it is getting bad. What else would make them make so much noise? I have metal masters up front with powerstop x-drilled rotors.

The reason your pads are squealing even when they are not worn out is probably because the metal flakes in the semi-metallic brake pad contact the metal rotor.. thus metal on metal squeals.. one thing you can try is remove your pads and rub them on concrete in a figure 8 pattern.. then reinstall them. also check and make sure all necessary parts are lubed and clear of debris.. hope this helps

But if you're doing that, might as well just get some new pads while you're at it.

why??? if they are not worn down far enough why waste the money.. it only takes like 10min per side with hand tools..

Well because if the noise happened once, it will likely happen again, and more frequently as the pads become more and more worn.

Well not that I have my new rims on I can see/touch my rotors. The one I touched I could feel the grooves, pretty deep. I bet this is at least part of the problem. How does this happen and how can it be fixed/prevented. Thanks guys

are they squealing when you use them or just driving down the road? don't laugh. on the way to the convention my r4s' started squealing at 70mph :-( . between relubing the pins, removing the anti-rattle devices and some serious heating on the track, the noise disappeared.

Most times I've found that brake squealing is a result of the pad moving/interacting with the caliper, not the rotor. Cheap pads are worse for this because they don't tend to fit snug in the caliper. The pads move around a bit, and the squealing is caused by pad to caliper contacts. This can happen whether you are under braking or not - you pads are in a certain amount of contact with the rotor most of the time, that will cause a certain amount of movement of the pad. Metalmasters don't qualify as cheap though... Make sure that all the appropriate places have brake grease on them, make sure that the appropriate shims and pieces and clips are installed.

Did you reinstall the backing plates and the anti-rattle shims when you put the pads in?

There's some stuff you can buy in the stores that you put between the pad and backing plate that reduces the propensity to squeal. It's almost like silicone.I'll see if I can dig upo the name at the house. Sometimes the pad will shimmy back and forth under braking or the backing plate will vibrate and the result will be a squeal.

I've run the regular MMs and didn't find it to be the pad material that made the noise, but sometimes this can be the case if there's a large area of metal in the pad.

Good luck.

When I worked at a Nissan dealer we used PBC grease (from Nissan) on the backs of pads to prevent squeal. Seems to have worked on my car and my parents' I30. Hope that helps.

IIRC the squeal is the pad vibrating at a high rate (frequency??). What you need is some anti-squeal goop-type stuff from any parts store. It *kinda* but not really glues the pad to the caliper piston, but it's not permanent and comes off pretty easily. It keeps it in place and stops the vibration.

In any event, that's what you need.
