Well, I'm looking at installing a harness in my '91 Sentra SE-R for autocross and/or track use only. I don't plan on using it on the street, so I'm not concerned about DOT legality.
Everything I've read so far looks like most people are using the rallye 3, and mounting it on the C pillar.
Is anyone here using the rallye 4 and have it mounted between the rear seats near the lap belts? Is installation of this any more difficult? I want to use only stock mounting locations.
It looks to me like the rallye 4 would have better sholder belt support because of the two separated mounting locations rather than one that is not straight back.
Any info or tips you have from this I'd certainly appreciate!
Thanks,
ak

I've heard it is dangerous to install a harness connected to the mounting points of the rear lap belts. Supposedly the angle created by this type of install is enough to seriously hurt your back and/or neck in an accident. This is more severe the taller the driver.
IIRC, there was a discussion on the se-r list on this exact subject right around the '97/'98 time frame. I remember because I ended up buying the rallye 3 and mounting it to the C pillar.

Hmm, just found those threads (sometimes it a bitch to find anything usefull on the main se-r list archives).
I'm probably one of the tallest SE-R drivers around (somewhere between 6'5" and 6'6"), and I can see how belts that resulted in an inverted V could put more pressure on the back in an accident. Looks like I'll just stick with the rallye 3.

Do you have a roll bar? If not, you may want to recosider using the harness. I am guilty of it also but I will not be using mine again till I get a roll bar. If you think about it, what happens if you roll with out a bar? Troof is going to cave in and you will be stuck there in your harness. With just the regular lap belt you will be able to duck out of the way. Im not trying to lecture, just wanted to know if you have thought about it.

Yeah, I've thought about it, and no, I don't have a roll bar and probably won't have one anytime in the near future.
Thats exactly why I don't plan on using it on the street, and, at least 98% of the racing I do is autocrossing, where the risk of rollover is significantly lower than in road racing.
It may be used for a driver's school or two, but I'm still not sure about that yet.

For those people that use one of these - do you have a problem with the left strap rubbing against the inside of the headrest post? If I don't do something about that, it'll eat up that belt pretty quick.
