: shifting without a clutch

Okay first I have done a search and did not get a straight answer to the question I have. I have a 91 b13 se-r. I would like to know at what rpms do each gear match up so that I would not have to engage the clutch to up-shift. (this is also known as speed shifting) I'm not saying double clutching, I'm saying speed shifting. I know its a tricky business but I'd like to know in each gear where the match points are so I can up-shift without using the clutch. Do I plan on doing all the time? No I just want to know.

I plan on taking MaddMatt's advice and buy the book "Going Faster" but I know it will not give me my car specifics. Please advise if you know for sure.

TIA

When your shifting without a clutch, you have to just feel it through your shifter where your gears are lining up.

well the rpms it would match up would depend on the speed you are going, so there's no definite answer to your question........ does shifting without a clutch get you better performance? i have tried it a few times, but the way i do it takes me so long (i kinda just lightly push on the shifter and then gas it up a little until it slips in) i dont see how it would help... is there a 'racing technique' that involves no clutch? if there is please share the proper method.... i guess you could just straight shove it into gear, but i think that would result in horrendous grinding..........

My brother used to do this when he raced his 5.0 on funny juice. It takes a lot of skill. If you miss the shift just a little bit you run the risk of loosing your tranny. The other way to speed shift is to keep your right foot on the floor while you push the clutch in just enough to slip into gear. I tried this once and figured it wasn't worth floating valves over or wrecking a tranny. I would only attempt these if you are a very good driver and/or it is a second car(not a daily driver).

I could definitley say thats how I broke third. Don't abuse your tranny :(

Thanks everybody for responding. I'll try and be careful figuring it out. That mindset is the reason I posted. Sounds like its not worth the risk, I'm quick witht the clutch as it is but I'm always looking to learn more and improve.

hehe... interesting you bring this up....

i dont know why i started doing this but i can shift threw all the gears on my moms 5 speed minivan without the clutch.. OK now stop laughing, im serious. I dont really care about that thingamavehicle much and i found that by backing off the throttle the gear shift will slide out of gear and by matching the revs to speed it will slip right in, no grinding. For example a 2nd to 3rd gear change i will hold my speed steady and slide out of gear than let the revs drop some and hold constant pressure on 3rd gear. When the revs match it slides in. if for some reason it doesnt slide in than i rev the engine again and repeat. Crazy but interesting. If anyone wants to come visit me in charlotte, i would be happy to illustrate :D

yep, I do that occasionally in my classic, anything to focus on during the repetetive commute =). The fun part is downshifting -- a quick blip and hopefully no grind!
