power steering pump makes that kind of noise too BTW... so replacing alternator doesn't sound as bad as replacing steering rack... I hope it's neither of those for you, but just to give you an idea

I have that same mysterious sound. My car wines. I have been asked by some ricers if it was supercharged. Well I came to the conclusion and the Help of Mr. Andreas Miko that it is my alternator whining. It has been whining for like 1 year now. It hasn't shit to bed so why change it if it is not broken!!! :D

I got the whine too... It came up after I tightened my Alt belt. I thought it was too tight so I lossended it but the whine stayed. Damn! Anyways, my friend said that maybe the alternator bearings are going bad. That does not mean the alternator is not working though. Hey guys want some cheese with that wine??? :o

Is the whine all the time or when your radio is on? If it's only when the radio is on then you could do a few things to fix that but that doesn't sound like what you're talking about. I noticed a whistley whine after I put my CAI in so I figured there was a place where air was leaking. I noticed I'd put the MAF plate on at the wrong clock position so it turned it around and put some silicone on it to seal up against the MAF. Didn't change a thing, still sounds the same, so I assume that it could be any one of the seams along the CAI that is causing the noise or that CAI's in general allow that noise to come out since they lack the stock resonator box or whatever the hell that thing was. I only hear it when I'm idleing though, the low growl that the CAI brings out drowns it out. :)
