Is there any reason to remove the valve cover to inspect the cams in an otherwise healthy engine? It is healthy as far as I know but I have heard of people finding worn cams at higher miles.

The cams can show signs of oil starvation. Do the finger nail test, run your fingernail across the lobes, it should feel all smooth and have the same texture. If you can feel roughness you may be having problems.
