: oil pressure question
cutter 06-16-2006, 04:58 PM i had a leak out of my rear main seal so i took it back to the engine builder and he said it is because i am ruinning over 100 psi of oil pressure when the car is revved up. what could cause this? what is the max the oil pressure should be? any help would be great.
i am running an sc 60 turbo.
CraigS 06-16-2006, 05:18 PM Not sure how to know the oil pressure based on rear main seal unless test is done on that specific application. In any situation, the seal should not be leaking. That brings me to a next question, how bad is the leak... drops, puddle after car has stopped for a while(?)
SE-R Sentra 94 06-16-2006, 06:25 PM i have the same problem i also thought to much oil pressure would cause it but it doesnt... for what ive heard your not supposed to put that nissan sealent then put the seal on your supposed to put it on dry w/o any sealent or lube, your engine builder proberly put sealent or somthing, .. how bad is the leak ? i get a puddle when i park up i put about 1/2 a Qt a DAY NOW !!!
spdracerUT 06-16-2006, 06:50 PM there's no way you're hitting 100psi oil pressure unless you upgraded the oil pump.
blackb13se-r 06-16-2006, 07:04 PM there's no way you're hitting 100psi oil pressure unless you upgraded the oil pump. yeah i got a de-t pump same as stock de, and max you can get even with cold oil is like 60psi.
worldcrafter 06-16-2006, 08:11 PM I've never seen anything higher than 50 psi on my DE, not even on startup. Maybe it's *** I have an electrical gauge
cortrim1 06-16-2006, 08:18 PM you would need a ve oil pump to hit that kind of pressure. my de-t only gets to about
75psi when the motor is cold. sound to me like he did not use rtv around the seal. its not required but it allows you to slide the seal in and if you make a mistake you can adjust the seal with out damage. You also get the added bonus of the rtv when you install seals this way.
SHAWNATGERBROCK 06-16-2006, 08:31 PM Rear main seal isnt affected by oil pressure at all !!! high oil pressure will not cause that ...... not having a correct PCV system or breather system will !! or just not oiling it during instalation or not installing it correctly .... I have seen SR pumps put out 100+ ... But its rareand yea, usualy an upgraded spring or pump ....... and never have seen an oil leak issue due to it ...

Sorry I disagree. On start up my oil pressure goes off the gauge(100psi).
WOT after war up im 70-80psi.
Andreas Miko 06-16-2006, 10:25 PM The rear and front seal see no type of high oil preasure.
The engine builer is full of it.
A VE and DE share the same front and rear main seal and my VE sees 100 PSI plus even when hot at high rpms.
wnwright 06-16-2006, 11:30 PM Hey Chris I forgot to save you number, but if you want give me a call and I'll go up there with you to talk to the builder if you want.

Wow... that's really high! I think even when i run 15w-50, I only see about 65-70psi after warmed up WOT. Heck, even when cold I only see around those pressures, maybe a max of 75psi.
The spec is around 45-57 psi at 3200rpms warmed up. Are you sure you have the stock DE pump or are you running some extra thick oil or something?

My blacktop S13 engine runs about 6.5 - 7.0 BAR ( 94 PSI - 102 PSI ) at 3000 RPM when cold using 10w30 GTX. I'm going to move to a 10w40 syn. and run an oil cooler soon.
At cruising on the highway I see about 4.0 BAR (58 PSI) sometimes a bit less (~3.8 BAR)
Most 300ZX's I've seen run about 100 PSI at idle using heavyweight syn. cold start.
cutter 06-17-2006, 04:24 PM thanks for all of the help. i am going to talk to the engine builder. he is a really honest guy, he is going to pull the tranny and fix everything for free. ha said he had the same problem with a supra he built a few years ago.
he wanted me to ask what the spring pressure is supposed to be and how long is the spring for the oil pressure relief.

This is a bluebird. I switch between 10w/30 15 /50
spdracerUT 06-17-2006, 05:01 PM Hmm... so the DE and DET pumps must be different. Only thing I can think of. I knew the VE pump put out more pressure.
det oil pump ring gear is thicker
when i was rebuilding my bluebird i bought a brand new de oil pump and it wouldn't work
so i ended up using a buddies RWD oil pump

hate to bring this old thread back, but can you use a RWD oil pump in a FWD Engine?

no, they have little things different but you can use it if you modify it.
