ok, i know it's not an sr20 but my friend is desperate...lol

alright, my friend has a 91 mr2 turbo. car is very nice. but just recently it decided to start acting up. you can start it up. drive it all the way to redline for like the first 3 minutes(as long as it's cooled down) and then after that anytime you try to go above 3 or 4 grand(depending on the gear). it totaly bogs(like just wont rev at all) and the cel comes on. as soon as you let off the gas. the cel goes away.

i was thinking that it might be the engine temp sensor. i mean that's what my b14 did when that went bad. any input guys???

hey richard, check out www.mr2oc.com , if you haven't already. there's alot of good info on there. i would be willing to bet it's an issue with the MAF, my 91T used to have alot of problems with the MAF before i bought it, according to the service records in the glove box.

Well first I want to say that it is very strenuous and hard on the motor to rev it up to redline when it is "cooled down". I dont know how bad it is exactly, but its definitly one way to have premature engine failure.

I have not had every CEL problem happen to my car, so I dont have any accurate theories as to whats wrong with it. Once I had a similar problem in that it was boost cutting at 12psi and it would bog hard after hitting 12psi and would have trouble revving up.

www.mr2-tech.com has a MR2 Turbo's BGB that can tell you what the diff. CEL's stand for, but what your friend needs to do is put a paper clip into the T1 and TE1 terminals in the small grey box in his engine bay that says "DIAGNOSTICS" on the cover. then he needs to turn the car onto accesories, and read the ECU flash. If I recall its the first blips will be longer and stand for 10's, then it will pause, and give you a couple short blips standing for the 1's. You will get a code# and then you will look it up on the bgb, and it will tell you whats going wrong with it.
If you click on "Diagnostics system" in this link, there is a list of the possible codes that might tell you whats wrong with it.

Code 52 is my most recent one, thats a knock sensor. I dont know if its a knock sensor in your case, but a broken knock sensor will make the engine run in safemode which you will notice a drastic decrease in performance. Once you do the required repair, pull the 15A EFI fuse from the fuse box in the back to reset the memory on the ECU. This should make the check engine light go away, and if its a knock sensor, would also reset the car to not run in safemode.

Also mr2oc.com and mr2board.com are great sources of information. Ask them your mr2 problem and you can have it solved within minutes (sometimes hours though)
