I'm not from there, but I'll be going there in June and would love to kick it with a few SR20 guys. Try to check out the main SERCA site and search for the Hawaii section, I'm sure you'll find some links.

Have you seen my dead clear coat '91? Chances are you may have since I do tend to drive all over the island. Drop me an email and we can get together.

depends if you are on a port city, i sent miy car with matson out of seattle it was about 830 bucks. Where your located at it will probably be expensive. I know from texas it was about 1500 bucks? do some research, you might want to drive on the other side of texas and fly out of a port city.

There is a drag strip over at Hawaii Raceway Park. That's about a 40 minute drive from Manoa. Open street racing at the track occurs almost every Friday and Saturday and it's only $6 to watch or race. There are monthly Road Course events held there as well as a "drift"session. Not to sure what the schedule for those events are.

SERCA-Hawaii is attempting to set up a track day in the near future so let me know if you end up going to grad school here and we can meet up.

$6 to race and only 40 minutes away!!! that sounds awesome... I have to drive 2 hours and pay $15. It turns out i missed the application deadline for next fall but I may try to move out there anyway and just take classes as an undeclared. What is the job market like? Is the cost of living as bad as they say? thanks

It is a pretty good price for a full night of racing. But of course the facilities aren't the greatest and nowhere near NHRA standards (of course the IDRC doesn't care and holds an annual race there). You can even sign up for "Pro Gas" which allows for more runs in the night as you get to use a special lane which has way less cars waiting to make runs.

Hate to say this but in general. the University of Hawaii isn't the greatest. They do have *some* good programs, but for the most part, I think you can find better education elsewhere and not get bored to death when you are not studying. Unless of course you love to surf and do a crap load of outdoor activities.

Job market in Hawaii is probably one of the worst in the country. Hawaii's economy is based on both the US (mainland) and the Asian market (mostly Japan). If one is having problems, most likely it will adversely affect Hawaii. Not since the mid-80s has there been a strong job market here.

Cost of living is horrible here. If you do have a job, you are getting about 20% less than your counterparts in places like Los Angeles. Then the cost of goods itself is maybe 10-15% more here. Median house price for a 3 bedroom/2 bath is still over $320k which should give an indication that even rental units are not that affordable either. The cost of gas has most often been one of the highest in the country for the past 2 decades.

Why would I stay in Hawaii then? My wife has a good job with good benefits in the event that we start a family. It is arguably the best place to raise a family due to it's low crime rate and high degree of ethnic compatibility. Drawback though is the public schools system sucks.

But hey, if you want to come over and try it out, go for it. Nothing better than experience allow for you own judgement.

well, i do like to surf (a lot) and hike and stuff. ANd the reason i picked UH is because of the excellent meteorology graduate program (top 3 in the world is what ive read). I want to get a job out there working for the national weather service and most of them get certified at UH. But 320K for a 3 bedroom???? that is ridiculous. My friend just got one down here for like 110K. And i know that both the japanese and US markets are struggling right now so its double bad. (moreso the japanese). Well, thanks for the info. Ive got to consider sunny and 80 everyday with good surf and hot girls vs. high cost of living and seclusion. It certainly gives me something to think about. At least i can bring my se-r!

nathan

ps: since it is based on both the US and Japanese markets does that mean that its easy to import car stuff from japan? There have to be tons of shipments coming from asia everyday.

Year round surf just waiting for you. I had a friend that came to Hawaii from New Jersey for that same reason. He also loved mountain biking so it worked out well for him. Up until a few months ago when he bailed from my office for LucasArts. Why I don't know.

Well hey! That would be one of the few good programs they do have. The others being Oceanography, Genetic Research, and...um...there may be a few others. But there are some big world class telescopes on Mauna Kea. And you can even ski/snowboard up there a few days in the year.

Check this out: http://www.surfhawaii.com/classifieds/right/openhouse/openhousehouses.html

That is the neighborhood I grew up in. A nice middle class area. And all the houses listed are not new.

Well today it was overcast and the surf wasn't that great: http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/current/sp/surf

hot girls
All the flavors you can think of and more. Ethnic mixes out here turns out some really good eye candy.

high cost of living and seclusion

And some wonder why I like to travel out of state so much. After over 3 decades, new experiences are always welcome.

At least i can bring my se-r!

The more the merrier.

Sorry no. You still have to sneak it around US customs. Not too many people want to take that risk.
