There are a number of good piston companies to go with. JWT/Arias, JE, Wiseco are the most popular ones. Prices range from $420-720 pending on how much engineering has been designed in the unit.
You can buy rods from JWT who carry Crower or you can get them from Cunningham, Pauter, etc. I just received a set of APR head studs that I bought from Back Yard Productions. While you're investing to have one built, also replace the timing assembly. It consists of the chain, upgrade to the latest style guides, tensioner, and tensioner bolt. Replace front and main seals, have the crank checked for trueness and have it micropolished. Consider buying the GTI-R main cap bolts too.
When you have you short block built, be sure to have it bored out with a torque plate! Also, try to use the factory chromoly rings. They tend to seat the best during break in.
A properly built short block can cost easily $3000. A long block with modified cylinder head can set you back an additional $1200-2000. Believe me, I know.

I am in the process on building my block. Its almost done. I wish i knew APR made head studs for the BB det. So i just got some new stock ones. I spend about 1,300 for just my rods and pistions. I think I am spending about 3000 on my bottom end. I hope it is worth it. I almost gave up on my car. We will see next week.

if i keep the same compression and just have better pistons ,rods, head studs, those types of things ,i should be able to run more boost ,right!!?
i have the stock bottom end running 19 psi right now
i want to run about 20-25 psi at the track on race gas

I think the head is only good to 23-24 psi I think.

Wiseco 9.0:1 CR pistons are great for street cars! Not to mention they are very reasonably priced! They are very responsive on the street and only lower compression by .5 . I can get them for you! Let me know!

I really hate to start a seperate discussion but a torque plate is used in the honing process. The block is bored but not to the desired cylinder width. The last .1 mil or so is taken off with the torque plate torqued to spec using a honing process. The torque plate ensures that the cylinders are at perfect round while the finish is put into the bore. The honing process takes material out of the cylinder while finishing the bore. The torque plate is NOT used while the block is bored, ONLY when it's being honed.

Since you did bring it up...:).... Why wouldnt the block be bored set up on a torque plate. Pardon my ignorance, just trying to gain more info on the topic.
