: HELP! Car Won't Stay Running!
myprojectB13 04-13-2002, 11:45 AM The car is a 91, a couple of weeks ago I noticed that I started getting a hesitation when driving, then last week the car decided it didn't want to run.
The car will start up, idle pretty irradically, and if I try to give it gas it stalls out. When I turn the ignition on, I can hear the pump priming the fuel system, but does this necessarily mean the pump is providing enough pressure? It seems like a fuel problem to me.
It was in need of a tune up, here's what I've done:
Plugs, Wires, Fuel filter, cap and rotor, cleaned K&N, checked battery, replaced 02 sensor, rechecked my MAF ground, cleaned throttle body, cleaned egr-bpt tube, checked EGR, checked for intake leaks using carb cleaner.
One thing I never noticed before was the amount of noise coming from the FPR, is it possible that this is bad, or the fuel pump? I'm in need of some help or any suggestions.
Can someone tell me how to check for codes using the blinkout method.
THANKS,
Jonathon
Projnx2000 04-13-2002, 01:20 PM Have you checked/cleaned out the grounds mounted next to the Throttle Body ( to the right of TB, near firewall)-2 grd connections mounted there.
Chris
BTW-Did you get a chance to check out the fuel pump(pressure)?
myprojectB13 04-14-2002, 10:21 AM No I didn't get a chance to check the pressure yet, what should it read? And I'll go check those grounds right now.
Anyone else have any ideas?
THANKS,
Jonathon
myprojectB13 04-17-2002, 04:23 PM I tried running the car with the MAF sensor unplugged and it runs like it does with the sensor plugged in! I'll try to get a code later.
I figured out how to get the codes, amazing when you read, but I went out to start the car and the battery is dead.
nismo91 04-17-2002, 04:47 PM Have you check your injectors yet? Check them, it sounds like one of your injectors are bad that's making it stall and idle irradically.

myprojectB13 04-18-2002, 12:09 PM Got the battery recharged and installed.
Ok, so I checked the resistance of each injector, they read 11.5 ohms on all 4. I pulled the fuel rail, turned on the key and the rail pressurized, and no fuel was leaking past any of the seals.
So next I decided to check the TPS, I could only get it set to .48 volts closed, and it increases to 4.5v full throttle. THe car started and ran!!!! Finally!!! I warmed it up and set the idle.
Went to work this morning, ran a little funny until it warmed up, I got on it, made a left hand turn, stepped on the throttle and nothing!!! Now the car is sitting on the side of the road waiting for a friend to tow it to my house, then I'm gonna check for codes.
Anyone have any suggestions? My frustration continues...
Projnx2000 04-18-2002, 07:49 PM A few things to check(if no ECU codes are present)
Don't quote me on this-
1. Check the fuel pressure:
Static(car not running, system pressurized)- should be around 40-43 psi (gauge after filter). If under spec(look in FSM to be sure of PSI) Check for blockages, kinks in lines/hoses, R&R fuel filter(doesn't hurt to have a new one anyway).
W/car running PSI should be around 36 to 40PSI(again check FSM)
Is the fuel pump orignal?
2. Check your plugs(gap, type, condition)
Check your wires and outside of cap(mist them w/ light spray of water-check for arcing)
Pull off cap, check the rotor(securely mounted, condition)
If all basic things check out, Line up Crank to TDC(2nd mark from the left), pull valve cover check out alignment of cams(int:10-11 oclock, exh: apporx 1oclock [small dots/indentions of cam sprockets])(again check FSM for correct specs)
If out of alignment, possible T-chain job.
Edit: rechecked your posts, realized that you replaced most maint. items. Do you have another MAF around that you can test w/?
Just a few things off the top of my head.
Chris
MaddMatt 04-18-2002, 08:56 PM I would look at:
Fuel pressure
Fuel filter
Error codes on ECU
Clogged cat?
myprojectB13 04-20-2002, 10:41 AM When the tow truck dropped if off it was running like crap so I checked the codes and got:
12 Mass airflow sensor/circut
14 Vehicle speed sensor
33 Oxygen Sensor
Then I started the car up later, warmed it up, seemed to run fine, i checked the codes and got:
55 Normal Operation
Took it for a drive, checked the codes again and got:
12 Mass airflow sensor/circut
Any ideas? Bad ground(s)?
myprojectB13 04-28-2002, 02:07 PM It turned out to be the harness on the MAF sensor.
The factory ground that I had piggy backed came unsoldered from my new ground and the orange/blue wire had about 1 strand of copper holding it onto the pin.
I soldered new wires to the 3 pins and soldered them to the old wires. And the car is running great now after a thorough tune up.
Thanks everyone.
