: Irratic Idle

I am having a problem with my SE-R.
I have a 1991 SE-R w/ the following (motor-wise):
Hotshot Gen III header
JWT S3 cams w/ECU program (cams/No AIV/POP)
Unorthodox Racing Pulleys
Hotshot CAI w/JWT POP charger kit (modified)
NGK Iridium plugs
New cap and rotor (OEM)
Magnecor KV85 wires
New NGK O2 sensor
Random Tech Cat
GReddy BL exhaust
270cc RC engineering blueprinted/balanced injectors
JWT timing gears (set to factory settings)[used later for tuning]

My idle "hovers" up and down 750rpm to 1200rpm slowly, almost like a "hunt" but much slower. This can happen cold, hot, morning, night, or not at all. I have had the car serviced twice at the dealership and they claimed to adjust the bleeder valve for the idle control. It continued to perform in the same manner after the servicing. Now, they don't know what is causing it. Supposedly, they used a Consult and everything checked out fine.

Any ideas. Let me know if you need any more detail. Thanks.

I noticed a more erratic idle after getting the S3/S4 ECU program although my idle doesn't vary as much as yours... mine is pretty constant between 850 and 950 with periodic surges to 1100.

I noticed that before the S3/S4 ECU upgrade that my timing at idle would vary quite a bit. With the S3/S4 ECU program the timing is locked in at 15 degrees at idle. I have a Techtom MDM so I'm able to check the ignition timing quite easily.

I've often wondered if an ECU without the S3/S4 program adjusts the timing to try and keep a steady idle.

Has anyone solved this problem?
Are we the only two to have this problem with our S3s?
Was there a recall that I missed somewhere?
Bueller? .. . . anyone?

My idle is "V8 ish" with the S3s. I like it, wife hates it. Check your MAF ground. Most of the time, it causes funky idles.

I too have had this problem. I have 91, S3 cams also.(JWT standard, not config. for s3/s4). The idle would fluctuate, even stall at times. After using Consult (a few times, I was a Nissan tech. so I had access to it :D ) to adj the idle, it would crap out a few days later.
Replaced the Idle Air Control Valve(what the idle screw is mounted to)- Idle stable after adjustments.
Possible excessive carbon buildup in the valve(tech talk!)
Its possible its 11yrs old.
My .02 cents
Chris

Thanks for the information.
I will try your suggestion(s) when the weather gets better.
I'll post my results when I'm done.
