: Lightweight Batteries?
RED 91 SE-R 04-16-2002, 02:06 AM What batteries do you guys recommend as a good lightweight replacement for the stock one?
Ideally I'd like to save a few pounds to improve handling/performance.
TIA

I just installed a Westco battery this weekend. According to their website it only weighs 25 lbs. This battery was designed as an aftermarket replacement for the Miatas. Check out their link at http://www.westcobattery.com

RED 91 SE-R 04-16-2002, 08:28 AM Steve,
Did you need to modify anything to hold the battery in place?
Straps, etc.?
Thanks

garys 04-16-2002, 09:27 AM Yes, some reconfiguration is necessary to install the Miata battery in a classic or NX. The Miata battery is significantly smaller than typical batteries, and the factory Miata hold down is sized correctly. I was lucky enough to find a wrecked Miata at a local junk yard, and it still had the battery hold down in it. Or you could simply source it from a Miata dealer as a new part.
On the Miata hold down, one end of the hold down is configured in a loop opening for the usual 'J' bolt, while the other end is 'z' shaped and slips into an opening in the Miata trunk wall. I ended up having to do some reconfiguration on the 'z' end, turning it into a loop to match the other side to accomodate the second 'J' bolt (a bench vise came in handy). After bending, I painted the hold down with a Krylon hammered metal paint finish.
I also bought new stainless J bolts, washers and nuts at NAPA, because the threads on the Nissan J bolts stopped short of reaching the top of the Westco Battery (although you could probably shorten the Nissan J bolts and cut some additional threads if you have the tools). I'm sure there are other ways to accomplish your installation, but I wanted to let you know what my experience was.

sr20ser 04-16-2002, 05:34 PM If you need a strap for one I could cut on out on a laser. All I need are some dimensions, and if you want anything cut on the strap itself. Not kidding. I get extremely bored at work so any little flat stuff like brackets, and straps, etc. are a welcome break from the boredom.
93BlackBird 04-17-2002, 07:42 AM exactly what kind of stuff can you do with your laser when you are "bored" :D. I will assume this is some sort of metal cutting laser?

Look under "Batteries" I do believe. Very small, very light. I think Naji has one on his 200SX, IIRC.
:D
RollcageSR20 04-17-2002, 12:52 PM Yup... Naji has one, and so do I. That battery is so freaking small and light (about 13lbs).

Can you use this as an everyday battery? For replacement of the stock one, or only for racing.
tpeele 04-18-2002, 02:49 PM Is it legal for STS?
RollcageSR20 04-18-2002, 06:02 PM Yes, you can use it as an everyday battery. Naji still drives his race car on the street every once in a while, and I had to live with driving my NX on the street while my 200SX was out of commission. After I got my 200SX back up and running, I left the NX sitting around for a few months. Started up with no problems.
As for STS legality, as long as the voltage is the same as stock, it is legal... Size, weight, and model is unrestricted. Based on my Techtom readings, the Dyna-batt has the same voltage as stock.

How long does that battery last for until you have to recharge it.
ALso, to recharge it do you also have to buy that recharger deal and charge using someone elses car. Could you tell me how this dry cell battery works.
coach 05-08-2002, 08:05 PM Can this battery be mounted on its side as well. I see they have a special box for it but it looks as if it needs to be m9ounted sideways.

You can mount it upside down if you want. Or any other direction.

coach 05-08-2002, 08:36 PM Thanks for clearing it up for me. I should have realized it as it is a DRY CELL! Darn it.

98sr20ve 05-08-2002, 09:00 PM Don't feel bad I thought the same thing. I just asked the dealer and what I said was pretty much a quote from him.:)

1. I don't know.
2. I don't know.
3. I don't know.
The battery seems to work fine, so I wouldn't have a clue as to how long it lasts or how to recharge it.
