: whistling/turbine noise???
eliterit 04-17-2002, 12:11 AM i have a 93 classic se-r, and am wondering why everytime i accelerate i'd say about 3500rpm and past i hear like a turbine sounding noise. It's made that noise since i first got it about 2 months ago. I've had people ask me if i have a turbo on my car, *** this one time i floored it leaving my girlfriends house and her sisters boyfriend was outside. and he said it sounded like a turbo or an intake. I do have a pop-charger sord of intake on right now, but its made that noise ever since i had the stock airbox on it. I have noticed that it has a small oil leak on the valve cover gasket, could this be it? Please help, i'm really tired of hearing that noise.
BTW, when i was on the highway passing up my girlfriend, (at about 80mph, ) she said she could hear that "tsssssssss" noise with her windows up. Also one time when i was a block down from her house.
Roll under the car and check out the flexpipe. Those will make a lot of noise when they fray.
I'd check around the exhaust manifold and downstream, too.
Come to the Texas Rally in Denton (north of Dallas) this saturday. We can check it out for you, but I think Jim is 100% correct.
The Texas Rally is not a race, but simply a gathering of the Texas SR/QR community. It's a great group of folks and you will have a good time.

eliterit 04-17-2002, 12:43 AM im not too mechanically inclined, (recently bought a pair of ramps and installed a topspeed short shifter last weekend <--First installation of anything mechanical on any car), but could u tell me what a flexpipe is and where it can be found under the car, and define frayed, sorry im a little eliterit. TIA
eliterit 04-17-2002, 12:46 AM yes i will be there at the texas rally this weekend, i've only had my se-r for 2 months and I LOVE IT!, I am really excitedd about going and hope i can gain a lot of info while im there. BTW, Has anybody posted directions yet?
MaddMatt 04-17-2002, 09:34 AM Mine did that only when accelerating in 3rd. It did it when stock, and after a changed a bunch of crap, so it's not the flexpipe. I'm thinking it's the transmission.
eliterit 04-17-2002, 10:56 AM the only thing that i had to replace on my car since i got it was the power steering unit, *** it was leaking all over the place,
I thought that noise that it makes was due to it not having enough powersteering fluid, and when i would fill it back up it would go away, but now that its fixed, it has enough fluid but still makes the noise. Just thought this may help.
Parson 04-18-2002, 09:23 AM I've noticed that sound on mine also. It happens in every gear and starts at approx 3700. But the pitch doesn't rise w/ RPM, just the volume. So, by my generally inept powers of deduction, I figured it was the intake. Stock air box BTW. Any thoughts?
eliterit 04-18-2002, 10:59 AM i seriously doubt its the stock airbox, because it made that noise when i had the stock airbox and after i took it out and put a cone filter.
blackb13 04-18-2002, 01:02 PM This may sound a little weird, but my car was making a similar noise and about a month later my water pump seized. They say to check the weep holes, but nothing was coming out of mine. If your car has 60,000+ miles on it and it was never replaced, you really should consider doing it.

I'm not saying it's the airbox, but somewhere in the intake path. I'm talking out my ass here, but it does seem to lead there. I can only speak for my sound, but it only happens with throttle (medium - WOT). Correct me if I'm wrong, but if it were the water pump, wouldn't it happen while crusing at the same RPM also? Does the water pump respond to throttle or just engine speed?
eliterit 04-19-2002, 01:28 AM The past couple of days i have noticed in addition to the whistling turbine noise in every gear starting at around 2k on up,,,,
lately almost everytime i start my car, for about 30 seconds or less there is this eggggggggggghhh noise,,, sorry that i cant explain the noise in text, but it reminds me of that time my master cylinder went out on my 76 B210.. the noise sounded something like that, but im sure its not the master cylinder *** i have no problem with the brakes. Im starting to think it maybe the water pump now,, but im not a mechanic so i wouldnt know.
And also in addition to this it sounds like the whistling/turbine noise is getting worse or is adding another sound to it, like a sssshhhhhhhhhh noise in breif periods of the turbine noise.
I might also add if this maybe of importance that sometimes when i accelerate, at around 3400 rpm i guesstimate that every now and then i could tell that the power of the car decreases for a breif moment. Is this normal? or could it have to do with the noises?? Please note this doesnt happen all the time, just every once in a while.
Any opinions are really appreciated considering i'm planning on driving to DENTON tomorrow for the Rally. I do not want to go finding out that my water pump is bad or anything and end up being stuck on the way over there.
blackb13 04-21-2002, 04:38 PM When the water pump died, it put so much strain on the drive belts, that my car just died out. I couldn't even get it started back up (not that I'd want to). Try using a stethiscope or using a long flat head screwdriver and put it up to your ear and listen to various places that might be making the noise. It should be pretty obvious. Other then that, the only thing I could think of is to take it to a mechanic.
