: A DET "Trust factor" question
Original Se-r 04-17-2002, 04:01 AM Ok. Here we go. I have found a local shop that has a hell of a deal on the DET swap in my classic. 1250 for motor, and 800 for install. Top mount included, as well as JWt comp and gauges and some other nick-nacks. And a wararnty as well.
Now, here is my delima. Are the "under 30k mile" engines re ally what they say they are? I have a feeling that when received, the motor will be oozing with an oil/gas/RAINWATER mixture. From those of you with experience, is a egular BB det swap the best route(when on a budget)? Any advice appreciated.
I guess while I am here, ill ask another. They have Gti-r engines avaliable, but the cost is boosted up to about 3k for the motor alone. Is it really worth it, or can I take the additional 2k for the GTi-R motor and trick up the BB?

aztecB13SER 04-17-2002, 04:28 AM all that and a JWT ECU to go with it...thats not a bad deal. make sure it's JWT, not the stock BB ecu. if it's stock, you can't put a boost controller on it. i have done about 12 or so swaps, and have never had a bad one. some are complete, meaning they have everything like power steering pump, alternator, a/c compressor, intake piping...da dah dah. all of them have the necessary components to run. make sure you check the oil pan. the pickup is really close to the bottom of the pan. if it's dented, take it off and hammer it out. a very small dent almost had me replacing a motor, be aware. go with a DET. you can ring a hell of a lot of HP out of the t25. get cams, front mount intercooler, starion conquest intercooler, UR pulleys, nice clutch, motor mounts, boost controller. that combo there equals fun. if you haven't done suspension or brake upgrades yet, scratch all that stuff and get that $hit done. DET is too much for stock brakes. suspension will keep your car on the road. have fun

Original Se-r 04-17-2002, 04:34 AM Thanks Aztec. I already have VF22 brakes, and ground control springs over Tokiko blues. As well as strut braces. The shop that will be diong it sprang up from a friend of mine's old shop. A good bunch of guys. About the ecu, do I need to have it programmed to the various add-ons, or can I just add them later? ie: boot controller and other det "bolt ons"?

Tell us more about this shop, please. It wouldn't happen to involve Stephen Jessie, would it? ;) He's a bud of mine.
Fill us in. I'm sure there's a few who would like to know of KY shops that do good SR20 swaps. ;)
Me too! Tell us tell us!!! :)

only thing you need the ECU programmed for is things that are ecu controlled. i.e. injectors bigger than the stock 370's, cobra MAFS, things like that. you can add front mount intercooler, boost controller, pulleys, cams, all that good stuff without getting the ECU reprogrammed. however, if you plan on ringing a whole shisnit load of power(read 240 HPrange), you are gonna wanna go with bigger injectors(MSD 50lb are nice) and a cobra MAFS. you can just run a boost controller. a buddy of mine just dyno'd 220 to the wheels with s4 cams, stock boost, stock top mount, and UR pulleys. of course he has the standard issue CF DF clutch(which is holding amazingly well), ES motor mounts(all 4) and a nice little intake we made outta 2 1/4 mandrel pipe. he wants to add a starion conquest front mount and boost controller. IMHO, he should upgrade his injectors and MAFS. if you are going for a known killer setup, get some s4's. mike kojima has suggested that s3's might provide more power, but i have no experience with that setup. whatever you do, you'll be happy. BTW, if you are going to run anything but a stock DET setup, do yourself a favor and get a 300zxTT fuel pump or the walbro equivelent. it'll cost you a DET if you don't.
