I have a 92 se-r, everything is perfect till recently @116K, the car starts to experience the 5th gear pop out problem. I found someone is selling a 96 G20t tranny for $800 on se-r.net. Anyone knows that if the G20t tranny will work on my car? How much work would be needed to get this done and is he asking the fair price? Really need some help here.................. Please help would be greatly appreciated

Get in touch with JGY, they can answer that better than me.

IIRC the G20 tranny does not have a LSD.

The G20T has the VLSD, but the gears are different.

I talked to Jason @JGY, he has 2 94' tranny available, but he can't say for sure that those don't have 5th gear pop out problem though. I assume that he is a reputable guy in the business? Hmm............ what's my options here? I really need some help here.. Any help

You could buy one of the '94 trannies and then buy the updated fifth gears parts from someplace like Courtesy. I've heard it's not too tough although that really depends on your skill and risk tolerance and how afraid you are of opening up a tranny.

You could also buy a used '95-'97 tranny from a 200SX SE-R which has the updated 5th gear parts. This is what I did when it came time to replace the tranny on my '92. Cost was about $650 delivered with 50k+ miles.

Just remember the '91 and '92 have a mechanical speedo sensor while the '93+ are electric. If you get a '93+ tranny you'll have to swap yours in.... easy to do.

Jason is a great guy and I've done a ton of biz with him - I know he wouldn't lie about a tranny, so if he is unsure about 5th gear popout he is unsure, so you have a 50/50 chance and having to drop in another tranny. With how un-fun a tranny swap is, I'd rather do it once and be done with it....

I found a tranny from a 96 se-r with 40k on it for $450 about a 2 hour drive from my house, went and got it and hopefully its ok lol that was a year ago and I'm just now getting to the GA to SR swap.

Thanks for the advice, Steve. So how much work is this mechanical speedo sensor thing? Would someone that replacing the tranny for me know what to do with this?

I am sure Jason is a nice guy, he even offered me $100 if I send my bad tranny back to him. I will give the car-part.com a try and see what comes up though. Thanks again for the advice.

I don't mean to be stupid, but how do you swap an mechanical speedo sensor out with an electric one? What has to be done in order to do this?

Loosen the bolt that holds it in, take it out and swap in you electrical sensor in and tighten. The G20 trans will swap but the drivers side axel is shorter than the SE-R axel..you will have to swap the outer spline from your SE-R to the G20 axel to make it work (thats if the G20 trans doesnt have LSD).
