: A/C issues
Vegita 04-21-2002, 03:23 PM hey guys, Im seriously wanting to get rid of my A/C. up here in washington i really dont need it and if it does get hot, the T-tops come off. what i want to know are the details. How heavy is this thing, I know it takes up lots of room. Has anybody uninstalled theirs and can help me out, or am i best off taking it in somewhere and having it done, and of course, is really going to be worth it? any help is appreciated..
FastNX 04-21-2002, 03:29 PM When you take the A/C out, make sure to take the compressor bracket out too, that thing probably weighs a ton. Also, take the A/C related stuff out from under the dash, there's probably a few pounds of stuff there. I'm guessing the whole deal would save you at least 50 pounds or so, plus better coolling because the condensor will no longer be there. I hope you have lowering springs too, because that weight may make the front sit high, beleive it or not. I took some stuff out of the rear of my car to raace, like ST, jack, rear seat, etc, and the rear is sitting like an inch higher!
BORNGEARHEAD 04-21-2002, 03:53 PM If you take your a/c off you need to go to a shop and have someone recover the freon. If you have r-12 freon, that needs to be recovered. Other than that, just start tearing it off. I took mine off and it frees up a lot of room and weight. If your a/c works, you can sell all the parts and make a little loot too.
Vegita 04-21-2002, 03:56 PM ok, some instructions would help if anyone has some time. Id appreciate it.
BORNGEARHEAD 04-21-2002, 04:18 PM For starters, you need to get another alternator belt since the a/c compressor runs on this same belt. You may have to get an alt. belt for a 91 Se-r without air. I think on a 93 a/c was standard. 91 optional. Remove the belt. There are 4 bolts holding the compressor to the block. Remove those.Ok, now there are 2 aluminum lines coming from the compressor. Those lines and everything attached to them can be removed. You have 2 cooling fans. The 1 closest to the alternator comes out. It is the a/c fan. It only runs when the a/c is on. The condenser comes off. That is the radiator looking thing in front of the radiator. Next to the condenser you have the accumulator. It's cylinder shaped like3-4 round and 8 inches long. It has an electrical connector going to it. Unplug it and remove it. On the firewall you have those aluminum lines that run into the firewall connected to your evaporator under the dash. I left my evaporator there. If you want to remove evap, you do it from under dash.
BORNGEARHEAD 04-21-2002, 04:19 PM oh, forgot. After you take off the compressor there is that big bracket that is behind the compressor. Take that off too. You will shit when you realize how heavy that compressor is. Good luck.
sernut 04-21-2002, 05:54 PM And while, you're at it, put on new underdrive/lighter pulleys. It is a great bang for your buck upgrade on the sr20.
The Unorthodox runs about $210 (best price at www.ptuning.com) but six of my SE-r budies had a set engineered by a machine shop and they only cost about $115 for the set. They work great... U/D is about 16-18% and they are much much lighter than even the Unorthodox.
If you're interested, I can see if the shop still has the "CNC program." Lemme know.
Also, don't let anyone charge you to recover the R12. If your AC still runs cold, it has value. Don't expect them to pay you for it but remind them that they'll get paid money to recycle it :) and it should get done for nothin...
Okay. Have fun.
Vegita 04-21-2002, 08:37 PM great! thanks for the help guys, looks like i have a project for next weekend, ya the a/c works great, I just dont need it.

Hey, Guys, I have a slight problem, so I did a search, and this is what came up, so I am adding! :)
I am IN THE MIDDLE of a DET swap, (nothing is really connected anymore) and I forgot that I had that coolant (I think it is R-34, not the older R-12 stuff) In the AC system. Now I have already taken off the Condenser, and the compressor, the 2 pipes that go into the fire wall. Everything else has fluid in it, and I have no idea how to get it out... Do I need to get a pump for the R-34? or can I just drain it? I know the R-12 (the older FREON) needed to be disposed of, but can I just drain this stuff? also, the hoses from below the reservoir, going under the engine, and toward the driver's side of the car, do those all have fluid in them? I would assume so since they are attached to the bottom of the res. Thanks for any help.
