: Vader Headlights. Custom project#6
SmoothDaddyFig 04-22-2002, 02:59 PM Im not into the bright eyed look of the B13 so I did something about it. I took a heat gun opened up the headlights and turn markers and painted them black on the inside lens. On the headlights I didnt paint the inner chrome house. Just around the chromed edges. I love the DARK LOOK. (breathing heavy) "I am your father"

RED 91 SE-R 04-22-2002, 03:02 PM Looks cool, but won't it mess up your visibility at night?
92_Sentra 04-22-2002, 03:09 PM Hey man that looks pretty sweet!
If I had headlights on my car I would probably try something like that :(

Are you quoting a Married With Children episode? I remember the one where Steve Rhodes tells Al about his idea for the 99 cent coint.

Not even. The thing is when you paint the actual headlight assembly, just paint it on the edges. DONT GO SPRAYING THE MIDDLE OF THE CHROME HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY BLACK. Its got to reflect light. I just painted where light didnt reflect. At night its just like before. Bright as its always been. :)
Using the heat gun was GREAT. Its amazing how many uses you can get from a $25 tool.
Sears has Heat guns for $25
Home Depot for $30
I used a standard 250 degree/1000degree gun.
I used the 250 degree mode for the lights.
The turnsignals are still bright as hell, too. You can see the big orange glow still at night when your blinker is on.
Rittmeister 04-22-2002, 06:34 PM I don't suppose you took pics with the lenses off, after you painted? I've thought about something like this after seeing the B15 guys do a similar job. When you talk about the heat gun, did you need it to get the lenses off even after taking off those metal clips? Also, did you have to take the lights/turn signals off the car to do it, or could you leave them on?
Looks good, by the way. I like. Wonder how it would look on my black car. I figure since I ripped the grille off from you I could do this too. :D ;)
edit: I see you also painted the mesh black on the grille. Looks bettah.

RySE-R 1 04-22-2002, 06:47 PM How DID you guys do that grill BTW? I like!
Also, the way I understood it you didn't need a heat gun to take the lenses off the headlights. Just undo the clips. Or am I wrong?
I think they look hella nice with your black rims Jon!!
I always admire how original your custom mods are...anyone can go buy a mod, it takes real passion to create one.
Great job Jon, I'd ask you for a how to but I already have the Tusru conversion. Oh and on that note my mod is almost done! ;) :D

No pics with the lenses off. :( I was too excited to take pics. I dont have much patience. Those metal clips dont do crap but sport a lil chrome on your headlight. They come off with a flat head screwdriver. Then you have to worry about the SUPER CONCRETE GLUE they use to seal the beams.
I had to take off the the grill, headlights and turn signals to get the job done.
While they're off take a lil ride in your new SUPER COOLING ride.

I have plenty of WIRE MESH leftover. But you do need the later B13 grill.
You are wrong about the clips. From my observation, the clips just hold the assembly together while the glue dries.
SmoothDaddyFig 04-23-2002, 12:00 AM Quick run down:
Heat gun $25 at Sears
One tube RTV Black Sealant $3.99
Two flat head screwdrivers
one phillips screwdriver
One can flat black ceramic paint. Only at AutoZone.
Basic millimeter socket set
-Take off grill. Take off turn signals.
-Only one screw holds the turn signals on. After the screw is off you will have to work it loose. There is a rod that connects the bottom of the turn signal to the headlight assembly. Its just wedged in there. It takes some effort to work it loose.
-4 bolts hold the headlights in place. The one by the alternator is the biggest pain in the ass.
-Take off the metal clips.
-TAKE OFF ALL THE BULBS ON THE SIGNALS AND HEADLIGHTS BEFORE HEATING LAMPS!!!!
-Start on a corner of any of the lamps Heat about a 6 inch section with Heat Gun at 250 degrees. Heat and pry apart corner. Once it gives way stick a flathead screw driver in the opening to keep lens opened. Start heating all the way around the assembly and gently prying apart with screwdriver.
-Dont take off the old glue. You will need it to reseal the assemblies. Just let it sit there.
-Once its apart, yell at it and ask it "WHOS YOUR DADDY!!"
-spray paint the whole turn signal chrome piece. NOT THE LENS!!!!
-Spray paint only the chrome edges of the headlight assembly.
I let some Overspray into the middle to give it that FADED IN look.
BUT DONT SPRAY THE WHOLE THING BLACK!!!
-Be sure to get top chrome edge. There is alot of chrome on the top.
-Also the side of the headlights have the big flat plateau chrome piece. Be sure to get that as well. You'll se what I mean.
- Use thin coats
-When you go to put it all back together heres an easy way:
-Heat up the old glue on both pieces of the assembly using the 1000 degree temp on the gun. Heat it tills its runny and melty. Do it fast. Then quickly snap the pieces back together so the old glue will dry again holding the pieces together. After its all back in place put some extra RTV BLACK around the edges just to be safe. Put the chrome clips back on.
-Put your car back together and go enjoy your new EVIL look.
