I just remembered...I don't know why it just came to me now. A couple weeks ago, when I was trying to diagnose the NX problems, I came across some weird things.

One, it had 4 quarts too much oil in it. This was why it wouldn't rev above 4K rpm, and probably why it always wanted to stall.

So, after I drained the extra oil out, I took it for a spin without the hood. People looked at me funny :). Anyway, during the maybe 1 mile drive, the Check Engine light flashed 3 times in a row, then would stop. I caught the last flash the first time, and the second time I saw all 3 flashes because I was paying attention for it.

I should have pulled teh ECU codes, but stupid me, I didn't. They won't be there now because the battery has been out for 2 weeks, and I can't drive the car around again because the motor is basically prepped for removal.

So, any ideas? I know i'm scrapping this engine (rather, parting it out and then scrapping it), but I'd like to know if this flashing light has anything to do with maybe the alternator or something external of the motor that I shoudl replace during the swap.
