: Car went to the dealer, no help at all :(
tmak26b 04-23-2002, 03:08 PM Hey guys, just took the 94 G20 to the dealer. They told me the valves are all stuck, both camshafts are bad and it would cost over 2500 to fix everything :( WHat do i do? I thought it was a simple valves adjustment and now they are telling me its a 2500 job!! What can i do?
92SE-R 04-23-2002, 04:26 PM Pull the valvecover and look for yourself. If there are score marks on the cams and sludge all over the place, you might as well replace the motor. If not, then you can sue the dealership and turn them in to the Better Business Bureau.
BORNGEARHEAD 04-23-2002, 05:03 PM Time for a DET.
Bowlcut 04-23-2002, 05:25 PM did the car run when you took it there? if it did, they are a bunch of idiots. Ok yea you could have sludge problems and scored cams but stuck valves....uh yea whatever.
tmak26b 04-23-2002, 05:33 PM He said they aren't stuck. They just dont open as big as it should. They open very very small.
97SENTRASER 04-23-2002, 06:23 PM correct me if I am wrong but I thought the valves were self adjusting
tmak26b 04-23-2002, 06:34 PM there are so much buildup that valves cant move
Pretty White 04-23-2002, 09:08 PM Thats is a common problem on most Automatic G20's that are babied. A friend of mine bought a G20 that would miss like hell. It was his cams too. I have seen/heard this problem before.
Dude. DO NOT PAY 2500 TO FIX IT! Pay them whatever it cost you to diagnoise it and get a 10:1 for $500. runnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!

They are. Does this dealer want to charge you for a new timing belt too?
Seriously man, you can get a JDM NA sr20 for way cheaper including the labor to swap it in. Don't go to a dealer for it, try a local garage. Give 'em a haynes manual and they'll be as good as the dealer. Give 'em a FSM and they'll be good monkeys.
Good luck.
tmak26b 04-23-2002, 09:26 PM I am gonna go to another mechanic tomorrow, but before i do that. I am going to drain teh current oil. Put new ones in, and then run the 5 minute flush, then drain it and change the filter. see if that helps. Freaking valvoline put like 20 quarts of oil in my motor
especse_r 04-24-2002, 06:19 AM Well good luck bro. If the other mechanic charge you 2500 also.. fuck it just get a new motor and labor for hella cheaper.
Late
tmak26b 04-24-2002, 10:23 AM I just drained the 600 mile old oil and put in new 3 quarts of castro gtx and 1 quart of marvel mystery oil, i hope i can degunk some of that
howard_w13 04-25-2002, 12:25 PM Can't say exactly what the problem is but I can say never waste your time at the dealer. It's much better to take your car to an independent shop to get it looked at.
PNWser 04-25-2002, 01:02 PM Degunk all you want, the damage has been done.
When people either a) don't rev the motorb) don't change the oil at proper intervals(low miles does not mean clean motor.. change your oil ever 2-3months if you don't drive 2-3k sooner than that! old oil gunks the motor too!)
Anyways, change the oil, rev the motor a bunch, and your motor will be happy!
It sounds like the dealership was right. Your cams have been worn down because the engine was not revved or maintained, the cam oiling tubes got gunked, and the cams have been grinding down since.
Get a newer JDM motor. They are cheap! should run you less than a grand installed if you shop right and have someone else do it. ~500 if you do it yourself.
PM me if you need help w/a swap :) probably can't help in person ***!

tmak26b 04-28-2002, 08:00 PM hey thanks for the info. What you said is probbably right. Well my question is, how long would the car last running like this? Also the car's ticking had been more quieter now than before. I can hear it from above 15 ft far. Other than that its okay, but there's one thing. It seems like after I drive it for let say an hour or just whenever, Under the valve cover I would hear something like a squeeky belt or something rubbing (maybe the camshaft bouncing off something). It goes away if i hit the gas a little bit, comes back above certain RPM. It doesnt happen all the time, only sometimes. I am just wonderign waht it is. Do you know?
silverser99 04-29-2002, 12:23 PM You can prolly get a VE motor installed for $2500 or get a 10:1 JDM motor and build it up
