Has anyone heard of a way to hook a laptop up to a car's computer for the purpose of reading codes or in place of a new ECU? I think that would be a pretty neat trick to be able to use. Let me know what ya'lls thoughts are...

yea actually thats been around for a while. Me and my friends(car club) have the software and stuff. ANd of course a laptop. Uhhh, if you have OBDI or OBDII you can do it. It will make guages for whatever too and if ur ecu threw a code. You could use the OBD scan to check the code. But yea...Its been around a while. The only thing that is expensive it the software and the cable.

Well, while it would be nice to be able to control the ECU from my laptop, I know that I would end up doing something stupid if I tried to. (i.e. blown manifold in F&F) All I am looking for is to be able to read the codes when my check engine light comes on. right now it is on, and I dont know what the deal is. Where can i get the software and cable? (I believe my B14 GA16DE is OBD-II, though I'm not sure)

Im not too sure man. The software and cable is the expensive part. Ummm, do a search for some type of OBDII scan in a search engine. Something should come up, if not...Ill find out exactly tonite cause I forgot.
