My B13 is grinding when going into 5th gear. My car also got stuck in 5th gear once recently when exiting the highway. After messing with it for a minute, it came loose and went into neutral.

I brought the car to the mechanic and told him about what happened. He said that it is most likely the 5th gear syncro and that the tranny has to be taken apart and rebuilt in order to repair it.

He said just put it in 5th gear lightly and drive it like that for now. He said to wait until my clutch starts to go. Then when the clutch comes out to be replaced, the syncro can be repaired/replaced.

Does this sound accurate? Is there a way to repair this without rebuilding the tranny? Could it be anything else other than the syncro?

Don't use 5th gear at all for now. YOu do most likely need a rebuild or a new trans swapped in. You can get a used trans on here for like $350-$500 if you want also. Have you checked fluid in the trans? Is it all burnt and full of medal shavings? Try draining oil from trans and refill with fresh. Might take a couple times to get all the gunk out.

Yea replaceing the gear is almost going to be a waste of time because it is so expensive (labor especially). Not to mention I dont know if Id trust the average mechanic to rebuild my trans.

Do what coach said and try flushing the fluid a couple times first.

Can I do that Aamco Power Purge thingy?
Or should I flush the fluids some other way?
