On these threaded collars, does it matter which way it goes in? I was looking at them yesterday, and inside each one is a lip or indentation about 1" in. Does this go toward the strut or up towards the spring? Does is even matter?

That lip on the collar is used on the back of my b14 with koni shocks. They make a peice that attachs directly to the Koni's and then fits inside the lip that you are questioning about. In other words, unless you have a b14 with Koni's it doesn't matter. I would still put the thick end on the bottom becuase it is thicker IMHO.

I second that. Yes put the indented side up so the thicker part is at the bottom of the strut body.
