: Mobil 1 10-30 for SR20DE?

It's time for an oil change, and I have read the recent posts extolling the virtues of synthetics. My local Costco sells Mobil 1 in the 10-30 weight (at $23.00 or so for a 6 pack). I know the suggested weight for our cars is 5-30.

Does anyone forsee a problem running the 10-30 Mobil 1 instead of the 5-30 suggested in the owner's manual?

TIA, Gary S.

With a higher mileage motor it is OK to run a heavier oil. My NX has about 105K miles and i run mobil 10w30

There's not much of a difference between 10w-30 and 5w-30. I've run both in my car.

The only time you might not want to run 10W 30 is in really really really cold weather.

Check your owners manual (glove box). It is in there.

actually you want to run 10-30 when it's hot outside, the 10 aspect is how thick the oil is, during hot summer days (80F +) the heavier the oil it will stick to the engine so that when you start up parts are already coated

During the winter the 5-30 will flow better in cold weather so it can quicky coat the internals faster than a 10-30.

I run 0-30 (mobile 1) in the winter and 5-30 (royal purple full synthetic) in the summer

Thanks for your responses.

OnyxEros,
This makes perfect sense to me. As we are heading into the warmer weather, I think I will go with the 10-30 @ Costco and save a few bucks on the cost. Next fall, 0-30 or 5-30 and all is well! Again, thanks for the responses.

I've used 10-30 (Castrol) since new, year round, without any problems. Currently have 184,000 on the clock.

Nope, other way around. 10W30 is a multi weight oil. 10- viscosity in cold temp; 30 - viscosity in warm temp.

Gary,

I found that Wal-mart is selling 5qt (big economy bottle) for only $17.00. They have the 5-30 and 10-30 in Mobil 1 syn. I bought one last night, might buy a couple more just in case they stop selling.

BTW, this was in Moscow ID, so I don't know if they are doing this anywhere else?

Those 5 quart bottles are a pain in the ass, considering my SE-R takes 3.5 quarts and my truck takes 6 quarts. I still just look for sales and buy as many cases as I can.

I thought I heard someone say that running thicker oil in our cars can lead to a spun bearing(s). Is this true? Also, would using 10w30 instead of 5w30 reduce oil consumption?
