So, last night I was watching an episode of "Rides" on TLC in which a team remote mounted a turbocharger just before the muffler on a Chevy HHR.

Now I would never do something like this, but It got me thinking.... Is there any reason I couldnt just weld up a pipe that would run from my current 2-piece header's Primaries (SSAC header) to a T2 flange mounted 1-2 feet away in the engine bay?

Is there any reason that this wouldnt work effectively?

my brother has a setup similar to the one your talkin about. he has a 99 maxima and he paid like $600 for some headers. I gave him a ride in my turbo sentra and he decided to turbo his car also. to make a long story short. Instead of him having custom turbo manifolds made after he just bought the $600 headers. He just had a pipe welded to the end of the header Primaries and placed the turbo where the battery was. It came out pretty danm good.

I know of a GA16 turbo guy using a Pacesetter header with T2 flange welded on. Works pretty good from what I can see. Not sure if it will perform as well as a regular manifold. I think for the amount of money spent on buying and welding on a flange, you could just get a bluebird manifold for fairly cheap (sometimes under 100$).

basically what I want to do.

I want to mount the trubo right where teh battery sits, and use a water cooled IC to reduce my charge piping to SUPER small lengths.

I would like to see pics of a manifold like this.

Its got me wondering too

I'm guessing you want to weld pretty much a 180* bend to the end of the header primary and twist it up to the battery area? Sounds like an interesting setup. Sounds like where the revhard manifold has their one turbo manifold setup to. Not bad.

there is a company that makes a turbo that mounts in the rear of the car. popular with the domestic guys. Google it

Thats how they do it when they Twin Turbo C5 z06's, I don't think there is enough room in the engine bay... as a matter of fact, I saw a z06 getting one put on like that when I visited Tank's shop in columbus...

I've seen them, they post the turbos all the way back, w/ SUPER long inlet/outlet pipes... the only thing that I don't like about it is the fact that you have to run the oil lines back there... the factor of safety has to SUCK. Definetely cools the charge though... I would assume.

But just think:
Hit a hard bump?
Oil Line gets loose?
Line falls, grabs hold of something?
Scraping?

Phucked... How the hell would you know if something bad was happening back there? I don't think I like it.

(you could say the same thing for an engine mounted turbo, but you know what I mean)

Awesome!

Are you using a FMIC?

I wish I had the bread for a Sidewinder!

http://www.sr20forum.com/showthread.php?t=96854 Thats my old set up, if you want i can sell you the manifold. It need relocation of the thermo stat housing, as seen in pics, and it has a T4 flange and 35/38mm WG flange.

fuggin sick man!

I dont think I will actually go teh route of moving the turbo....

but I definitely want to go with a Air/Water IC where the battery would be.

Here is a quick sketch of what I plan.

on a GTiR T28.

^^ would your water lines be coming from the hard pipes?

i would run an external 12v pump from a tank inside the car, using an alchohol/water mix.

I don't think you can run a MAF under boost. Have to move it to the pre-turbo piping.

blow through is possible, there are speculations though...

Too bad I sold my Stillen, it would've worked great for this kind of setup. Equal length 4-1 with a 2.5 collector.:(

As posted above.... Many people use Blow-Through setups, with GREAT results. Epseically when it comes to throttle response and being able to us an Open air BOV.
