Just found a tranny leak on my car. I must have screwed up the seal when I put in that new axle. Dammit, if it's not one thing it's another.....

Think of it as practice, So when at the track when needed you can replace both axles in 2mins!!!

The only way I could do that is if I knew what I did to cause the leak. I don't know...

Wow, i hope none of the cars I worked on have this problem.....so far so good though.

Anyway, when I was working on the 3 sr20's that i work on (my friend's, my bro's, and mine) I couldn't get the old seals out, nor did I feel like it.

So, I have 2 sets of axle seals brand new never used. 2 driver's sides, and 2 passenger sides.

I guess I'll sell em if you guys need em, *** I don't think I will. I got them from Courtesy. The driver's side is $4.46 and the passenger side is 5.40. Say $10 shipped and one set can be yours!

The FSM tells you to change the axle seals every time you pull the axles or the tranny or both. That is what I do and I have never had a leak. If you do not change the seals, your more than likely to get leaks. It is a gamble though, if you do not change the seals.

You might also want to check the switches the tranny might be leaking from there. On my classic there was a leak from a switch. I removed it and re-sealed it and we had no problem. We also changed the axles and seals for good measure.

Naji,
Thanks for the response when i put in the new seals how should i do it. I read somewhere that it needs to be flush with the tranny but not pushed to far in. Just let me know so i dont end up getting new seals then messing those up. Thanks :)

which seal is the leaky one, the inner or outer? Autozone has just the inner, and i would have to order the outer :( can i just change the inner?

Yes you must keep the seals flush with the tranny. What I do is fit the seal by hand at first, then I get a wide socket and a hammer and tap SOFTELY on the socket while it stradles part of the seal and part of the tarnny lip. That way the seal ends up being flush with the tranny lip arround the axle shaft hole.

Also, get the OEM seals. I only buy critical parts for my SE-Rs from the dealer. Find a dealer that will give you a SERCA discount in your area. I get SERCA discounts on all my parts (including NISMO) from Nissan of Garden Grove.

Make sure you tap the seal flush, not all the way in. I made that mistake once and it leaked all over. Thankfully, replacing them isn't THAT bad. In prying old seals out, don't be afraid to use some force because they tend to be really jammed in there. With some carefully applied pressure it should pop right out.

The switches are a pain, but they are an easy fix once you get in there. Try using teflon tape around the threading if it's a switch.

I would try just removing the axle and putting it back in. eric96ser recommended this to me. He said if you don't put the axles in carefully (particularly the passenger side axle) that you can get the seal all cock-eyed and it would leak. I did this. I simply removed the passenger side axle, put it back in oh so carefully, and it hasn't leaked a drop since. :D

Well you were lucky. Most of the time it would leak. Why take a chance and have to do it all over again. Get it right from the first time. The seals are not expensive. They run about $30. The FSM specifically tells you to change them every time you remove the axles. I like to do things the right way the first time. You took a risk and you got lucky. I think you should go to Vegas :D

I took the risk because I couldn't get the part that day and Eric suggested it so I tried it. So MaddMatt if you can't get the part in and you have free time, give my way a shot :)

yeah but at the same time, when putting the axles in be very careful and line it up correctly or it doesnt matter if you put new seals in or not it can still leak. Last time I pulled the axles out and put them back in, I never put in new seals and it never leaked a drop... Not saying not to put new seals but just to be careful.
