Sup, im in the process of swapping out my old motor for a jdm de and i had some basic questions for you guys. Ummmm, is it possible to take out the engine without removing the transmission? Do you need to remove the drive belts to r emove the engine? When you replace the crankshaft front seal...wait how do you replace that one? I guess thats all i can think of for now, im so tired. Thanks for all the help. You guys are awesome.

it would be easier if u just take the whole engine out with the tranny. in that case when u swap ur jdm engine, all u have to do is unbolt it from the old engine and put it on the new engine and put it back into the engine bay.:biggthump

Yes you can leave the tranny connected. You can leave the belts connected. Take the crank pulley off, pry the seal out but be carefull and replace the seal. You can use the butt end of a screw driver to "hammer" the seal flush.

me and my friends **** had to do this????

You just get someone strong enough and make sure when u chain the hoist up *** u leave a lil more slack on the pulley's side(left side) so this way when u hoist it up...u want it to point it at a 45 towards the ground(even if someones gotta get on ur passenger side fender to help get it at this angle)

just make sure all the sensors and wiring is disconnected and watch when pulling it out cause the tranny can get stuck at times under the driver side front wheel well.

Yoyo, i got all your replies this morning but i was too busy to reply back. Thanks!

So everything went really smooth today, i got some amigos to come over and they helped alot. We removed intake, battery, sensors, vacuum lines, fuel hoses, power steering, alternator, starter, fans, AC thingy. Then we supported the tranny and got the hoist in position on the engine. Then we removed the tranny bolts and we couldnt get enough slack to break the engine off the tranny. The oil pan was hitting the passenger axle...DOH!?!?! Forgot about that guy. So we kinda got pissed off and called it a night.

Tomorrow we plan on removnig the axle and then getting that biatch outa there.

Jer_760, unfortunatly i didnt have a tool to remove the crank pulley, oh well it should be easy to replace later if it leaks. The only gaskets im gonna replace are the intake mani, exh mani, and the VC (already did that one).

Keep the advice coming.

Oh ya and my parents dog killed their cat today that was kinda weird.

replace the H2O pump too man, not expensive and will save you time now.

You can go rent a pulley puller from autozone. You give them around $40, then they refund your money when you bring the tool back. DO NOT try and pry the pulley off with a screw driver. The front cover is pretty thin.

Sweet thanks bro, i will deff. replace that H20 pump while its accesible.

A little update: So we got the passenger side axle out no problemo, but there still wasnt enough room to get the engine free of the tranny. Its not possible becuase the flywheel and clutch extend atleast 3 inches into the transmission and there isnt that much room to get the clutch to clear the tranny. There's only like 1-2 inches before the pulleys hit the fender. So we ended up disconnecting everything else from the tranny and lowering it to the ground. Then it was cake to raise the engine out from the top. Thanks to all you guys this project is coming along pretty smooth.

Tomorrow everyone has to go back to work but me. haha. So i plan on swapping over the usdm intake mani and exhaust mani and all the swensors and the H20 pump. Maybe more parts too, i dunno my motor mounts are pretty shot but they are expensive...Then ill bolt the tranny up to the engine AND THEN put it in. much easier that way.

So ya today was pretty chill. I poped off both water pumps and the one in the Jdm motor looked really shiny and clean. So i reinstalled that guy. Then I swapped over all the sensors except this one underneath the intake mani that i couldnt figure out. Is that one important>?

Then I swapped over the USDM intake mani and ex. mani. No problems except the EGR tube was a major pain in the ass. Also, one of the TB bolts woulnt go in and that was because the female part of the bolt was totally stripped out...FUCK!! So i just put alot of sealant around that area. So the new motor is all ready to get attached to the tranny--I just need to get a new clutch and a few misc hoses and then I'm putting that biatch back where it goes.

YES!!!!! Do it NOW!

I had to replace one with engine in place and it was miserable experience.

Sorry I'm late; having been there done that, it is a LOT easier to pull ---- actually DROP the gearbox/block together; as long as you have it out you oughta be doing clutch/pp/to anyway; it's a LOT easier to mate the mounts to the gearbox/block unit anyway. See fsm. DO WELL, GOOD LUCK.

thanks bro! Its great to get some advice from someone who knows alot about this. Im like you when it comes to cars, im trying to do everything the right way so i can have piece of mind that it will run well.

So ya i got a new clutch kit from the dealership for $100 cash (ya hookups). I even got the flywheel proffesionally resurfaced too! and new belts also.

School started this last wednesday so ive been busy with that and all, but tomorrow evening im heading back out to the shop to hopefully get my car all done.

One question ***...Are you saying its easiest to put the mounts on before dropping the motor/tranny in or after? Also, is it very hard to drop the motor/tranny combo in from the top. I see your point about doing it from the bottom but im kinda sketch about raising the car up that much and all.

So, we ran into more problems. I put the shorter flywheel bolts from the auto back on and they totally stripped the crank out. So i retapped those sluts. Then i forgot to put the tranny/engine gasket on so i had to take the clutch and flywheel off again to put the gasket on.

Then we mated the engine up with the tranny, and we couldnt find a bolt to fill this hole. It's on the tranny and its right underneath the starter, and it needs a pretty long bolt. Anyone know if its important?

Then we dropped the engine in from the top, pretty straightforward if you get the angles right (my dad is genious with ropes and stuff). Got the mounts installed except for the front mount becuase it kinda ripped so im gonna replace it.

Next weekend were gonna finish this for sure!
