How are sprint springs on stock struts that are brand new?

I had a friend that bought GR2's when he installed his Sprints on his NX2000. He bounced alot.

sprint are prolly the worst springs on the market, IMO. eibachs are worth every penny.

I've heard some pretty crappy things about Sprint springs. My roomate posted a question about Sprint springs on a Ford Probe forum and about 10 guys replied offering to sell him their Sprint springs. Sounds like a bunch of unhappy customers.

How would intrax springs ride on a stock set of shocks and struts? Would I need to trim bumpstops? Would there be any clunking when it's all done?

Thanks!

Hey Curt, I saw from one of your other posts that you're new to the SE-R world, so I'm gonna learn you a thing or two :)

DO NOT use those springs with stock struts!

Unless you go with coil overs, nobody makes a good spring for Classic SE-R's. Eibach, Sprint, Intrax, they all drop the car too much and are too soft. Classics have very limited suspension travel, and you should not lower the car more than 1" unless you install shortened struts, and/or special mounts. Even with a good set of struts most of those springs will have you hitting the bump stops frequently. Combine that with tired old shocks, and believe me, you'll be hating life.

If you're on a budget, your best bet for struts is KYB AGX's, you can get them for $369, including shipping from Isidro at www.highperformanceonline.com For springs, either go with Ground Control coilovers for ~$399, or check out the spring deal I'm heading up for $239, look here -

Well lets say this. I am looking for a lowered car that handles and rides well. I didn't think that the AGX's would lower the car much so I was avoiding them. Sure they ride nice, but you would still have the ugly fender gap---yuk.

What can I do to lower the car and have it ride nice on a major budget?

AGX's will not lower the car, springs will lower it. You say you want it to be lowered and ride nice on a major budget. Is that a typo?

I have the Eibach Sportlines on stock springs. I cut the bottom portion of the bumpstop. The ride isnt THAT bad. Its not a Lexus but it is definitley livable. The car doesnt bounce except on obvious bumps, like potholes and crap. Im waiting to buy some GR2s.

shumax,
It all depends on your taste. You have to start meeting up with people and see how their ride compares to yours. Every person has different tastes and opinions. Im glad I got the Sportlines. VERY HAPPY.

Dude, you gotta be living on the land of no bumps or something. I don't want to start a war, but I think you're in the minority here regarding ride quality of Eibachs. Refresh my memory, don't SportLines have the same rate as Prokits, but more of a drop?

I'm rolling on ProKits with new AGX's and Koni bumpstops, and the car bottoms out *allot*. I had ProKits with Tokico blues on my 91 SE-R *way* back, and actually paid the shop to take them off and put the stock springs back on because of the bottoming out issue and generally crappy/bouncy ride. I can't understand how stock struts can work better with SportLines than what I have/had on my SE-R's.

My neighbor has AGX's with Gen1 Hyperco's. The Gen1's lower the car more than ProKits, but since they're a higher rate, they keep the car off the bumpstops (most of the time), and the car rides a helluva lot better than my AGX/ProKit combo. As a matter of fact, my *stock* struts/springs with 100k miles bottomed out less than my *new* AGX/Prokits. I dying waiting for the the new 300/200 springs to be made, and will be happy to get the Eibach's off my car.

if your struts are brand new then save the $$ to get a set of eibach prokits. they'll drop the car 1.5". if that's not low enough then sell 'em and get some sportlines. you could also check the classifieds on se-r.net or our for sale area for some used springs.

Yes, I said budget. I ran H&R Springs and Tokico struts on a 95 SE Maxima and the thing rode OK, but made all sorts of noise in the rear.

I just want a mild drop that results in no more than 2 fingers b/t the top of the tire and the bottom of the fender lip. It also needs to ride firm, but not harsh. Finally, it can't bottom out except for extreme cases. Finally, it can't make any noise at all. I don't want any creaks, banging or thrashing in the suspension.

If that's possible, sign me up with answers, product names and prices I should expect to pay.

Thanks!

shumax,

i believe the combo you are looking for would be Eibach ProKits and KYB GR2's. I have this on my car. I bought the ProKits used for $140, and the GR2's for 50 each from tirerack.com. I used all of the stock mounting hardware.

The ride is a lot firmer than my previous worn-out-stock condition. The ride feels like a 2nd gen RX-7 or a Miata. Very firm. It does bottom out, but only on extreme bumps. The ride is definitely liveable, and you'll only notice how firm the ride is if you constantly switch between cars. Riding in a Camry after riding in my car makes the Camry feel like its on air. No lie.

But, i'm VERY happy with my setup. It may not be the best solution for autoxing, but for daily use, its fine. I've had this setup since November 2001. You can see more pics of my car here:

www.tcnj.edu/~sysant2/

Good luck!

EDIT: it doesn't make any noise, and its not bouncy....just so ya know ;)

I really dont have the slightest clue on any "rates".
I just ride in peoples rides and if I like it then i'll go with that.
Tampa is under heavy construction and there are bumps everywhere!!! My experience is this:

*The ride is GOOD for a spring/stock strut combo.
*I cut the very last bump thingy on the bump stop on all four struts.
* I have NOT botomed out YET!!!
* The ride is crazy when you hit a big ass dip, but thats expected.

I know we are have different experiences and thats just mine.
I feel you, chris.!! :)

i run Hypercoils/AGX's at all 4 corners. it flatened the car out a lot in the high speed turns, the progressiveness of the springs is unsuspectedly good. when i actually drive the car, it has to go through a seriously heinous pothole-filled alley, and even though i drove it slowly, it very rarely even bottoms out.

I don't have much time right now, but here's a quickie,

AGX's for $369 + the new group deal springs $239. So for under $600 you get no noise, adjustable shocks, a 1" drop, and a good firm rate of 300/200 which is equal to what allot of people running Ground Controls are very happy with.

Optional - Koni bumpstops ~$60
Replace boots & mounts ~$150 (guessing here)

You are right---your setup is EXACTLY what I want. I wonder if they still offer those strts for $50/sturt!?

I don't want to seem like I'm berating you here, or putting down anyone elses setup, but I think you should search through Forum here and see what people say about shocks. Maybe even start a poll asking peoples opinions about GR-2's vs AGX's. If in the end you decide that the AGX's are over your budget, and you want to stick with Prokits, you'll have your pick of used ProKits once the new springs come in and many people (including me) remove our Prokits and put them up for sale.

Stay away from Sprint, Arospeed or any of those cheap ass springs. I had my lesson.. You will get what you pay for. Get an Eibach or Ground Control.

chriscar,

i definitely would have gone with the AGX's if i could have afforded them. The GR2's were a combined birthday gift from 4 people, so it wasn't something I was to refuse.

I couldn't be happier with the setup that I have now, although I do foresee myself getting upset with it if I decide to take it autoxing or onto a roadcourse :)

But, given a budget, I don't see anything wrong with GR2's.
