Sorry to revive an old thread, but im just querying the removing of the power steering resovoir. Shouldnt it be sealed off, coz wont all the fluid be pumped out the filter? Comments.....

Yes, it should be sealed. This is a pretty ghetto method.
The fluid will get dirt in it and all sorts o' crap from being exposed to the atmosphere for so long.

i just removed my p/s rack and pinion and was going to replace it with a manual steering rack from autozone lifetime warranty but went to an issue and is the joint that goes in the firewall wich join the rack to the steering wheel assembly i noticed that the p/s rack the pinion is a little fatter than the manual rack. Now my question is should be that piece that is different for manual rack or is it just i get the wrong manual steer rack from the store? Maybe its from a B12 because that chassis shares lots of things with the B13. Any help will be great!

Yes, the joint there is diffrent. Also, the booot that goes from the firewall to the rack is diffrent, atleast on the b14. There may also be a missing plastic chip that's needed to center the steering rack. I wouldn't accept it if is missing.

Thanks i just figured that. I'm going to order the new joint this monday a OEM replacement if i can't find it today in an junkyard. Thanks a lot!

I do have to say, finding a manual steering B13 is next to impossible. It took me over 2 years of weekly junkyard searches to finally find one.

i finished my non-powersteering conversion a week ago because i find a nice shape manual rack with the joint included for $100 :D i just need to remove the p/s pump its the only thing left in the car :D. Good Luck finding one!

so id like to seal the system and bypass all of it. i thinking i will get an electric water pump in the near future.

so question...

do i need to leave fluid in the system?
this will be a track car and not a daily, i just dont want to have to replace an se-r ps rack after 1000miles because it didnt have the fluid to lube. im okay with the fact that it may wear quicker, i just dont want a failure on the track.

as it stands now...i have a leak in the system and most of the ps fluid is gone, i like how it feels now. i need to make a change sooner than later bc i dont want the water pump to go out bc the ps pump is still connected with no fluid.

Really, the correct way to "depower" a rack is to:
disassemble the whole unit
remove all cylinder seals
remove the spool valve
weld the torsional portion of the valve (to remove the "spring" feeling in the wheel)
then pack all bearings with a good grease, and grease the pinion and rack, then reassemble.

Also, steering with a real manual rack is easier, the manual rack has more turns lock-to-lock. But I find the depowered rack isn't too bad, you get used to it pretty quick.

So I have searched and searched and no one on any of the forums has given the part # for the non ps belt. I have seen them for the cars with ud pulleys but not stock pulleys.
