It's a break of forum rules. Use the new warning system.Regular users can't. But they CAN report posts! What will it take to get more people to report posts?

It does seem that the VERY, VERY few minority report post. Personally, I am with STRATTON on this issue. I briefly answer the question and point them to searching for more info. I don't think that is a rude thing to do. Either that or I will totally ignore the post.

If I am, Sentrixx is the first complainant.

I am really not sure why I don't report more posts. I think people feel like they are whining or bothering you if they send a PM reporting small problems.

Just to clarify, should I report all problems I see to you? or is there an appropriate moderator for each section that can be contacted? If so, who moderates what section?

Just hit the report post button and every mod can see it. Matt will see it for sure.

It's the thing that looks like an upside down yield sign.

I report shit all the time, smacking that little yield sign. Non stop really.

I always laugh when someone says in a thread "wait till the mods see this" or "the mods are gonna shut this down." Yet, the person making the statement has obviously not reported the thread. It makes no sense to me.

I reported two seperate posts today. One the mods agreed with, one they did not. They have better judgement than me.

I briefly answer the question and point them to searching for more info.
That is entirely, 100% following the rules of the forum.
» No flame wars, personal attacks, street racing stories, political, religious, or posts solely to tell people to search.
Look at the word in italics. Solely.

Seems to me that if you are not solely telling them to search, then you can certainly: a) answer the question and b) tell them to search.

If a post is questionable, you think the guy posted solely to tell the noob to search, then report it.

My impression of the rule is that it severely curtailed (if not outright eliminated) the rude and abrupt "SEARCH NOOB!" posts. Maybe I'm wrong. If I am, Sentrixx is the first complainant.
I agree, it has nearly eliminated those posts.

That's my issue. Mods are still doing this. I'm sorry but I have a problem with not helping people. And when I see someone that was giving the duty to help, telling someone to search even *** it was something they didn't find what they were looking for by searching. The thread was closed and the person was told to search. And that was ALL that was said. And this was to a noob.

Now just from those fact's. You guys tell me how you would feel if you walked into say a parts store.. asking for a certain part on your car that broke. And you had no idea as to what it was and where it was from. And the guy behind the counter gave you a book about 10 inches thick and said search for it. And walked away.

Would you go back to that place? Would you recommend it? Would you ever send them money to support there cause?

NO.

Plain and simple no.

All I am asking is, if your going to be a member of these forums. Have some common courtesy and help people that just don't know. People follow from example, and just telling them "THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE" and doing nothing to help is just plain pathetic. And when you do that, you are making everyone here look like that.

I know personally I have gone out of my way to help people. Esp on my HOW TO threads. I get PM after PM about the same question. Even *** it was plainly noted in the thread. I not going to send them the link and tell them.. " It's right there.. Didn't you search?!!?!??!". But , just because they personally don't understand isn't going to make me stop from helping.

Honestly... Isn't that the reason for this place?

That thing was NOT showing up yesterday, I am sure of it, I looked all over for what was the report button. Just little green check marks or X's showed up next to where it should be.

Maybe The button should say "Report", and it would get used more.

I think there is some green involved in your assertation. .....

You can still click on something that is an X or a check mark and it will still work. Sometimes I get those also, usually waaaaay late at night. I figure the admins are updating or something.

OK.

I respectfully disagree. We used to light up newbies all the time. I just don't see it as much anymore, if ever.

Posts solely telling a newb to search. Someone being a jackass and no help whatsoever.

Examples please.

I see your point to a degree. While rather abrupt, that is still a pretty mild statement and action by the moderator.

That question is covered in the Technical Library. The Technical Library is referenced in the "How To Search" thread in New Members. Post #6. I must say that the newb certainly would have been flamed in the past. How much searching can you do and not find the Technical Library?

I'da thrown in a link to the "How to Search Thread" and the Tech Library.

If you feel that way, you can report the moderator/moderator actions to sr20boston.

I don't think our mods are perfect. Unlike me, the picture of forum tranquility, tact and social graces. ;)

If you disagree with a judgement call, there is your answer.

*EDIT*

You know what..... Your not even fucking worth it.

You need to grow the hell up no matter how many years it takes. And I hope to god, if you have kids. They know better not to follow you poor as example. Karma is a bitch Shawn... just remember that.

I must say, I agree 110% with you. Im not a noob to the whole car scene or modding but there is a lot of stuff I dont know. I always run a search before I create a new thread. I just HATE when people just tell me to search, sure I might find something but for the most part the things Im searching for, usually those threads are two years old, a lot can be discovered in two years.

Some of the veterans on this forum should be ashamed! They think that because they know more than us noobs, they are better than us. They look down upon us like were idiots for not knowing the things they did. Well guess what? How did they learn all this stuff? im pretty sure they all started out asking questions.

I try my very best to help people with questions, regardless of how many times its been asked in the past. This forum isnt gonna survive if all it is is an archive of 2 year old threads. Im a complete noob to this turbo thing and for the most part, people have been very helpful on here, thats why I keep coming back here to post.

Also, the reason most of us dont report problematic posts is because as someone said, I thought it would be bugging the mods because I personally know how hectic it can get trying to manage a forum

This is not a very good comparison because mods are not paid to help nor does the information here cost anything. Store employees are paid and nothing in the store is free. I can't expect every little detail to be tended to. Helping all newbies that post is NOT POSSIBLE. I'm glad you go out of your way but I can't expect my moderators to do it. It's clearly in the forum's best interests to make it as newbie friendly as possible, but I have to improve things in practical ways!

This rule was enacted to REDUCE the search posts, you can't expect it to stop.

Ian, you posted something a page ago of how another forum tries to reduce repetitive questions. I have seen this before and will look into it again.

Shawn, we've been down this path before! Report posts BEFORE reacting to people. :squint:
