: Knock Sensor Bolt..can't get off
gomba 10-22-2006, 02:57 PM Ok.
I can't get the knock sensor bolt off.
When I put the wrench on it, the wrench hangs almost straight down against the engine and I can't even get my hand around it. I'm pushing with the thumb and creating hardly no leverage. The only position I can really get any leverage on it is by making a fist and pushing on the wrench, but the wrench is sliding and it's stripping the bolt.
It's not that I'm not breaking loose the sensor bolt because it's on there too tight, it's the fact that I can't get any good leverage on it.
What can I do??
Oh, I also can't get the Y bar out. Was thinking about just bolting it back up after I'm done with the knock sensor, but I'd like to get it out.

Update: Found a smaller wrench but now having problems getting bolt off, scroll down.

mpg9999 10-22-2006, 06:16 PM Are you using a ratchet or a box wrench? If your using a ratchet, switch to a box wrench, most are angle at the end so it will move the handle away from the block. Either that, or use a small extension on the ratchet to space the handle away from the block.
swiss 10-22-2006, 06:57 PM I do remember this part. ;) I made sure the wrench was positioned squarely on the nut (to keep it from slipping/stripping) and tapped the wrench with a hammer

Ok I have an update..I found another 12mm wrench I suprisingly had that is shorter than the one I purchased.
It is an open end wrench with a 12 point box.
Becase it is small, I can actually fit the 12 point box over the bolt, however, since the wrench is not very long I can not get good leverage on the bolt and the bolt seems to be stuck on there kind of hard. I tried for quite a while to break it loose using hand strength and PB Blaster with not much luck. I also have fear that using the 12 point wrench will start to strip the bolt, but i'm getting a MUCH tighter fit on the bolt using the 12 point end vs the open end.
Swiss - How exactly did you do that?? When I put the wrench on the bolt, it won't stay in firmly in place for me to use a hammer and I can't figure out a way to get both hands through the bottom of the car to hold on to the wrench. I put the wrench onto the bolt, but the wrench is not staying there and sometimes just falling off the bolt. It also seems like a tight fit to get a hammer through there. What method did you use with the hammer?? Give it short strikes or a few real hard ones?? Have to remember I'm a n00b at this stuff.
Thanks for all the help guys..hopefully tomorrow I'll get the damn bolt off and finish this thing.
And if anyone can remember how they got the Y bar out of the engine bay that'd be helpful too, I got all the bolts off the bar but can't figure out a way to twist and turn it out of the engine bay to remove it.

How do I use an extenstion???
daveracer 10-22-2006, 09:53 PM Get a deep socket to fit over the otherside of the open ended wrench, and a long extender to fit in the socket. It will act like a breaker bar and give you more leverage.

lolololol whens your next exhibit picasso
P10maniac 10-22-2006, 10:00 PM use your wrench, place the closed end over the bolt and let the open head hang down
now grab another wrench and wrap the closed end over the open end and use it as leverage
i dont have any pics so bear with me
0------c
this is the wrench that you will wrap the closed end on (zero being the closed end and the letter c being the open end)
0------c o-------c
now wrap the closed end on the open end of the wrench and push
i hope this helps

LOL, sorry, i wasn't gonna waste my time going to my garage and getting the parts out, taking the picture, uploading it onto my HD, uploading it to photobucket and then posting it. :biggthump

hmmm, how do I keep the wrench securely on the bolt?? That's the problem I see with all these ideas. Wouldn't the wrench fall off the bolt or not set on there securely?? I can only fit one hand up there at once..so I can't hold the wrench onto the bolt and use my other hand to turn something.
blurr.rt.by.you 10-22-2006, 10:05 PM just go to sears or autozone and buy a ratchet wrench size 12mm. then find your self a nice size pipe that you can fit over the wrench. make sure youre loosening it and not tightening it. put some umf in it and there you go. all this would be easier if the car was on stands and up pretty high more room= ease of removal

I can't get a ratchet on it because there's a hose in the way + other stuff, the only way I can get at it is with a wrench.
blurr.rt.by.you 10-22-2006, 10:17 PM ok so use a ratchet instead of wrench but just make sure its flat on the screw head. this should not be such a big problem
swiss 10-22-2006, 10:38 PM OK here we go with the fuzzy memory again...
I'm thinking the hammer method was sticking my right arm up in there to hold the wrench on the bolt with the tips of my fingers, then tapping (gently to moderate) on the other end of the wrench with the hammer. The end of the wrench was far down enough that I could get to it with the hammer. Maybe your wrench isn't as long.
Details are fuzzy that's just my best recollection, but I am certain I was able to use a hammer. I wasn't having much luck either. That mofo was seized up pretty tight.

lol..yah I have no idea why it's on there so tight.
well, I'm going to have a friend come help me tomorrow, so hopefully one of us can hold the wrench and the other one can try hitting it with the hammer...might get a little gay for a second under the car, but I hope I can get that damn bolt off ;)
If the hammer doesn't work I'll try all the other methods.

It's only gay if you all exchanging fluids in cavities...
I did the unthinkable and removed the intake manifold from the motor and changed mine. It was more work but everything was accessable, plus I cleaned out the IM and replaced some of those rear coolant hoses.

I also removed the intake manifold,it's the right way to do it!
All the time he has now spent pissing about, trying this and that, take the manifold off and be done with it for good!
gomba 10-23-2006, 04:26 PM how hard would it be to take the intake manifold off?? what do I have to do??
Also, the bolt is now stripped so I'm using vice grips.
I also messed up a wire that was down there. Looked like some sort of sensor or something, it was to the bottom right of the knock sensor. I have no idea what that is. I accidentally pulled it out when I was trying to remove the knock sensor bolt. Anyone have a clue what that was?
What other options do I have now that the bolt is stripped?
