: WTF? Different length axles

I bought a JDM transmission to put on my 1992 NX2000 with Bluebird swap. It was a later tranny, because I had to swap the electronic speedo sender on it for my stock manual one.

I saw the engine the tranny was attached to, looked like a standard highport NA SR20DE.

I had trouble getting the driver's side axle in, until I pulled it out, took a look at it, and it's longer than the JDM one that came stuck in the tranny (it's hacked off, see pic).

I took the axle end off, installed it on my stock axle, it fit in the tranny fine. However, the axle is now not long enough to reach the hub properly.

What the heck is going on here?

I'll throw a guess out that the new tranny isn't a LSD. Can you find the tranny code on it?

yeah that short stub at the end of the axle gives it away...its a non lsd axel. I had one trying to put it in a lsd tranny...no worky...till i found it had lsd. Unfortunetly this case happens to be a non lsd.

Oh no. But when I had both axles in and turned, both spun in the same direction...

No dice? I'll look for a code later, thanks for the feedback.

Some thoughts:

can I throw a Nismo LSD in the non-LSD tranny case to rectify the problem?

or can I take my stock tranny and combine parts to make a "Frankentranny" out of the two?

What's wrong with your current tranny?

The Nismo LSD for a non-LSD tranny runs about $1000 and you'd still need to find the right axle.

Not sure about the frankenstien tranny thing :melonscratcher:

I blew fifth gear. A buddy is rebuilding it for me. I want a spare tranny.

I got this one pretty cheap, it has fewer than 60,000 kms on it.

I don't mind if the Nismo LSD is $1K. I know it would deal with the power I'm putting down much better. Then I could buy a non-LSD axle for it and be set, right?

(does that make sense?)

I would wait for someone else to verify, but yeah you would need a axle for a non-LSD tranny. You will enjoy the clutch type LSD, it changed my car completely on the track :)

Seriously? (about the LSD) Ok. Silver lining.

Car won't get put together until spring now, but I usually keep it out of the salt anyway...
