: Lifter chatter.... Help!

Maybe it is just me, but I am noticing more chatter coming from under the hood. I am fairly confident it is a lifter. One seems to be louder than the rest. I have searched the forum best I could and here is what I came up with:

1. Check timing. I have the UR Pullies and from what I read I may have to find TDC manually by taking out the spark plug in cylinder 1, using a long screw drving and rotating the crank by hand. The instructions state that the marks are -5 TDC 5 10 15 20. See that thread here (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10071&highlight=UR%2A+Pullies). Has UR corrected this or is there still a chance that the timing marks are inaccurate????

2. Do an engine flush. Drain existing oil, change filter. Put in an engine detergent like the STP stuff with new oil and let it idle for 5min or so. Change oil and filter again. Possibly add an oil treatment.

3. Pop the valve cover and inspect things. I am guessing that I should just wiggle stuff to see if anything is loose??? I know that sounds kinda silly, but I have no idea what the check-out in there:) HELP!

Can anyone add to any of these options, or have any other ideas? I don't want to do anything too extreme, its still under warranty:D

TIA,

No oil flushing. Bad for ride! If you are into high milage (100,000+) your probobly looking at replacing some hydrolic lash adjusters. These do wear with high miles and Nissan says you should replace all rocker arms at the same time. One of me blokes had this problem and it sounds like my engine is following suit. Hope this helps.

Cool, good to know:)

I do need to know about the timing marks on the UR pullies from my first post (number one). I am going to get a timing light tomorrow and give it a shot, but I am really worried about not having the correc timing mark info.

Any info would be appreciated,

TIA

From what I understand, the early UR pulleys were very vague with the timing mark(s). I'll try to find the article about that. The newer design is set up like the factory marks. The 2nd one in from left to right (should be the larger mark) is TDC and should be correct now. Taking the spark plug out is one idea. You can also look at the distributor rotor once the cap is off. Let me know how it comes out.

Does anyone have the procedure for replacing the lash adjusters? Is there a shortcut or do I have to tear down have the engine?

Replacing them starts with removing the cams & rocker arms. From what one of mine blokes went through, it was easy from there. You will have to take the new lashers and submerge them in oil siting straight up. take a slim metal rod and while in the motor oil, push the rod in through the top. you will feel a spring check valve inside. it should release the air bubble inside. Keep them straight up after that. They should be an easy drop in after that. If you need pics of this procedure, just send me an e-mail.
