Hello,

I have noticed small puddles of gear oil underneath the SE-R, so I brouht it in the garage and wiped the transmission down. Few hours later I see that the leaks are coming from the two sensors. I believe they are the speed and reverse sensors. It does not appear that the leak is coming from the mating service but from the sensor itself.

Here are my questions, can the sensors itself leak? Is there any way to repair or is the only option to replace? How much do these things run? Are these available at the local parts store or dealer items only?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Those are the reverse and neutral switches. The only way to fix the leak, is to replace them. Last time I did that, they were ~$25 each.

Mine is leaking right were the shift linkage goes into the transmission. Any one know what i need to do to fix that?

There's a seal for that, too. Part # 32858-M8001. Hanging on my wall waiting for a day when I actually wanna do that - to find out whether I just have to slide the linkage stuff off and slip it in over the shaft, or saw the gearbox in half to do it - - -. It LOOKS like it'll slip in and out.

I know it isn't right, but I've never changed these. I wipe the area as clean as I can get it and gob sealant on them (permatex/McKanicka whatever). Then I do it again a few days later. Fixed for almost nothing.

An inexpensive and harmless fix, Ben - it's not a pressure system, you're just keeping stuff from falling out. Probably won't get you points at a concours, but the objective is to seal it up, not make it purty. :-)

Thanks! At my school we replaced a trans in a 93 civic, There was a pin holding the linkage to the trans that you just poped out with a center punch and pulled it off. Hope my transmission is similar, if so it should only take 10-15 mins to replace.

Sorry guys but the seal for that shift linkage has to be put in with the shaft out.And the only way to get the shaft out is to split the tranny, there are 2 or 3 little balls that sit in grooves that are on that shaft and they are held in by springs.Thats what makes your shifter go back to the neutral postion when you take it out of gear.Good luck

Not surprised - I have the fsm, but it's such a slight seep I've just not bothered to look it up. Got it when I bought the axle seals for the swap. 2 dollar part, LOTSA labor. Bah humbug -

That is wrong. The seal for the shift linkage is very easy to replace. How do I know? Ask me, I did it. The hardest part is pushing out the small pin holding the linkage on the shaft. From there on the boot is just slipped off, and the seal can be taken off and a new one put in. Takes about 15min. Don't belive me? Talk to Tiaden. We did it on his tranny as well. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions.

Well, that's what it LOOKS like, but I hadn't done it. the good side is if Derek takes it to the shop it won't cost him much.

Sorry guys,I thought you meant taking out the entire shift shaft from the tranny.

NP. Just remember. The "pin" is actually "Pins" I believe there are two so don't get confused :) I think we used punches to get the larger, than the smaller out first. Glad to be of help. This is an easy job. All watch this to make sure none of you have problems.

Replaced it yesterday! Only thing that worries me is the actual seal dosnt sit flush with the transmission. Its like 3 cm way from being flush, but it cant go in any farther because of a lip on the inside of the tranny. I put some sealent around it just to be safe. No leaks so far! Thanks for all the help!
