: 1.6 in SE-R?

Check this out. I went to look at an SE-R and the guy had swaped in a 1.6 litre from the 200sx. The car ran fine with a new clutch and axles. The body was mint and the entire car was in great shape. I just can't believe that a 1.6 would work in a 92 SE-R. He was asking $1500.

Thoughts?

I was so pumped to see the car pull in and was ready to buy it. Then I popped the hood for an inspection and saw that tiny little engine in there--YUK!

You say the body is mint, and the car in general is in great shape. Here is a different perspective:

Say you came upon a Se-r in excellent condition, with all the running gear verifiably in working order, but with a blown engine. How much would you pay for a car like that, knowing that you can find low mileage SR20DE engines from a number of sources at inexpensive prices? (I've seen prices bandied about on this forum of $550.00 to $800.00, or more expensive if you wanted to get something even more exotic. I keep seeing Andreas Miko's name mentioned as a good source for just about anything Se-r related, but especially mechanicals).
Anyway, just another take. Not everyone has the time and inclination to do an engine swap, but it might be kind of a fun challenge. And you could probably sell the 1.6 to recoup some of your SR20DE costs.

thats a good positive way to look at it garys, but who in the world would put a 1.6 in place of 2.0. Its kind of astonishing, but I started laughing my ass off when i read this post. Some people just don't know.

Are you sure it was originally a 2.0 SE-R ? It wouldn't be the first time someone swapped badges and a bunch of other stuff to make it look like something it isn't.

I suppose a 7500 rpm redline would be a good giveaway that it was originally an SE-R, unless he only swapped gauges. I think the tail light are different as well. I cannot fathom why someone would put a 1.6 in there with all the very inexpensive Primera engines to be had. I'm sure he didn't save very much money in the end.

Talk him down to a grand, and put a -VE in there :)

Thanks for all of the feedback. However, I bought a different car. Mine's a Ruby Red 93 SE-R with intake and exhaust. It has been lowered with Suspension Techniques springs and has KYB struts and 16x7.5 rims on 40 series Nitto 450's. It also has a front strut bar and a mint interior and body. The best part? Only 75,000 miles. I should be picking it up on Thursday.

Thanks again!

P.S. It was an SE-R that I saw...it had the 7500 redline, the tails specific to the SE-R, seats and even the exhaust tip!:) Not to mention that this guy wouldn't even begin to understand how to upgrade a reg. car to an SE-R.

maybe he found the whole thing in a junk yard cheaper and easier than he could find a sr20

I live near Columbus Ohio--Mansfield Ohio where Mid-Ohio is located. The car I looked at was actually in Covington, Ky.

Sounds like an SE Sentra, but I think they still had drum brakes the rear. The SE sentra came with all that seats, guages, lights like the SE-R only with the 1.6L. Anyways if he had a 1.6L out into a SE-R, we should go hang him.
