: Carbon Hood???
cossieturbo 05-04-2002, 01:54 AM This may have been asked once before, but here goes. Anyone making Carbon fiber hoods for the NX? I was going to have one made at Mosler (they build the MT900), but that would be $2,000 for the 1st one. After that it's about $250-$300 per unit. Maybe I could just glue on two huge intakes side by side and the lift they produce would make the hood lighter. That's why the Honda guys install them, right? ;)

Subculture 05-04-2002, 05:34 AM Several people have tried to get Fiber Images to make hoods for the NX, but there wasn't enough interest.:(
NX$paniard 05-04-2002, 08:09 AM the fiber images group wouldve gone thru for the nx hoood.. but they didnt have a hood to use as a model.. plus the guy also needed a b14 hood...so he was just asking for donations when the people were already payin upwards of 500$ plus time plus shipping.... i think it couldve worked out for us NXers because there were only like 5 or 6 that wanted in....then theres was the whole scoop debate .....nother story there...
NX-DET 05-04-2002, 09:47 AM i hate to start this again and have it blow through like last time, but why don't all the nx'ers that want carbon fiber hoods post in this thread right now.
I'm not talking about with scoops and shit, but just being happy with the plain nx hood.
lets get a count first and even see if there is big enough demand for one. and if we got enough people, then shoot an e-mail to fiber images and see what they say.
I'll be the first to say that i want one.
let's say for the sake of argument that it will probably be 400.00 to 500.00 shipped for one.
Doug:D
cossieturbo 05-04-2002, 11:22 AM I want one... and if anyone wants to add a scoop, then just go to a shop working in fiberglass or carbon and they can easily graft a scoop on.

socalnx 05-04-2002, 01:54 PM If you assume $2000 for the first, $300 foreach additional for manufacture, and $100 to ship each one, the price schedule follows:
5 = $740 per hood
10 = $570
15 = $514
20 = $485
The $500 goal would be right at the mark of 17 hoods for a total of $8500.
If the price is $250 foreach additional hood the $500 goal falls to 12 hoods. This schedule follows:
5 = $700 per hood
10 = $535
15 = $467
20 = $438
Subculture 05-04-2002, 02:15 PM the fiber images group wouldve gone thru for the nx hoood.. but they didnt have a hood to use as a model..
Len had asked if I could donate my hood for the prototype, but they needed my for hood for at least 4 weeks!
I couldn't see driving around without a hood. I don't know if they had asked anyone else. Plus they couldn't get enough interest locally to justify spending developement money for one.
plus the guy also needed a b14 hood
They make one for the B14.
NX-DET 05-04-2002, 05:02 PM i had though that someone said a brand new hood for a nx from a dealer was like 160.00. so you would have to take the total number of people interested and divide it out.
unless someone else who lives closer can find one in a junk yard and we could split that cost.
again, we would need a number count of at least 12 people then to even worry about discussing the details.
focus 05-04-2002, 08:17 PM The NX is a limited market and shrinking. I would be in for one of these. Can we give it another try?
And it should be stated that this will be a standard hood, no scoops. Then maybe we could get the qty required.
Just checked my price sheet the OE hood retails for 287.00.
Not sure how much people can get off of this.
cyc5181 05-04-2002, 11:37 PM ive been thinking about getting a CB hood for a long time, **** thought that NO ONE makes them...... even *** its a lil early for me to get one, but count me in anyways~!!!

Subculture 05-05-2002, 05:52 PM I need to know what the price will be before I commit.
Also, has anyone considered trying to have a fiberglass hood made as an alternative?
focus 05-05-2002, 08:03 PM I am going to have a friend post on the 100nx forum about this. Maybe someone from Europe makes one or perhaps they might be interested in this.
socalnx 05-05-2002, 08:06 PM The novelty is very apealing to me. To have a cf hood made by Mosler adds a bit to that.
Cossie, can I say that your the organizing point man here ? I am not sure that you have officially volunteered yourself to the position. This may take a couple/few months, it will take some time and determination.
There are some details to work out like getting the model hood to the garage for the first run. It creates a bit of a chicken/egg problem of obtaining and delivering a hood before you know that you have the ppl/funds to complete the job.
Also, group buys tend to collapse into the "what next" syndrome. Where alot of ppl say "yeah - i want one" but they do not want to send any money until they are sure its not going to fall through. Its reasonably smart really, no one wants to send several hundreds of money-order into a black hole. This sometimes ends up where there are enough ppl saying "yeah" but no one is sending cash.
I think that paypal works well for this. Paypal can act as an escrow to hold the money. Then the organizer does not have to accept it and transfer it to the bank until everything is in place.
Back to the Mosler CF hood deal.... I am courious about what price Mosler is actually to commit to. Also, whether it would require buckles, or if it would latch normally. If the price could be leashed down to 1700 fist/250 additional, hitting price goals will be much easier. (10 instead of 12 or 17)
All that being said. if I commit, I will be #5. 5 hoods gives us a price near $700. But, we are not sure about the price. I think a commitment from Mosler is in order here.
ok - ok - I am in if we can get it down to less then $600 shipped. I will commit to that. ( whew :p )
NX-DET 05-05-2002, 09:47 PM from what i've seen price wise, for the honda's and acuras for cf to fiberglass was only like 50.00 difference. for like the crx it was 325.00 fiberglass and 375.00 cf. which would you pick!!
NX$paniard 05-05-2002, 10:51 PM I currently have hood pins and am contemplating a scoop so i would have to dump extra cash to accomadate that also... is there any color options?? natural cf would look like crap w/ my red/white scheme....i hope im not being a party pooper....
fiberglass might b cool.. cheaper...lightweight...more commonly worked on...??? just a thought
cossieturbo 05-06-2002, 12:05 AM "socalnx" I see your point. 1st of all, Mosler has always been good with me about keeping their word on price. I will call them again and work out the logistics of time and money. In no way does this commit me to Mosler. They are very cool about talking and working on ideas for free. I will find out about the hinges, etc... Mosler can do many different color combos once they have the mold. Red/white, red, blue, yellow carbon kevlar. I realize that I will, one day, have to come up with the cash a hood to do this. At least I know there would be some interest. I'll get back to you blokes on the outcome of may talks with Dan at Mosler. Hang in there.
Cossie

I think a fiberglass hood would be a viable option if the CF hood turns out to be too exspensive.
I'm not too concerned with aesthetics, just as long as I can save some weight off the front end.

I agree. I really need to lose some weight on my front end, seeing as I just put my car on the scales and the closest we could get the car to balanced was 67.5%/32.5% front to rear distribution...and that was AFTER corner balancing! If a cheaper fibreglass unit could be made, I'm down.
Don't know if this will help, but I do have a spare NX hood in my garage from my parts car. Problem is, I live in Vancouver Canada.
