: Celica GT-S VS. SE-R
Crono1321 05-05-2002, 10:28 AM Hey guys. I have a question, but I have a story to explain my question. Here goes:
One day on the way to school, I came to a stop light and this 2002 Celica GT-S pulled up and revved his engine at me. I'm not really one to turn down a challenge, especially since I haven't had any excitement for around a month or more, so I revved back. When it turned green, we both peeled out a little, and I took the lead, staying in the lead until the lane merges. He was too far behind to catch up, so he got behind me. This was around 2 weeks ago. Now his friend is saying he "would beat the shit out of my car if we ever raced." Is this true? Oh yes, his car is automatic, not 6-speed. What a wasted opportunity. Someone give me some advice. I know its a GT-S, so he's probably right, but we did race and I beat him. WTF? Suggestions, advice?

OnyxEros 05-05-2002, 11:19 AM not many street racing stories around here so i don't think you will get much of a response
Streetracing is dangerous, and unpredictable
The unpredictable part is what you should be concerned with. If you do race anything can happen
good and bad
O
mpg9999 05-05-2002, 05:15 PM I seem to remember seeing in a mag. that one ran 15.8, which I thought sounded very slow. I think the GT-S has a lot of high end, so make sure you race them from a stop.
Benito Malito 05-05-2002, 06:41 PM The GT-S is close to a flat 15 or lower in the .25. Maybe you read the GT, or something.
I'd imagine Automatics cripple cars like the GT-S.
The SER's will definitely pull away off the line, even on a GT-s with a stick. My bud has one :) In second he will hang close, and start to gain as you are shifting to third. By the end of third gear you are toast, unless you have a really nice top end. (or have turbo/nitrous etc..) Remember third sux in our cars.
Suggestion??? Don't race on the way to school ;)
especse_r 05-05-2002, 07:32 PM I have beat a GT-S with some bolts on like a month ago... but i got NOS though. I had no problem with my friend GT.. stock vs stock... I have experienced to race a GT-S without NOS. I lost.
Crono1321 05-05-2002, 08:16 PM Alright cool! Like I said before, I did take him on that one red light, but I have yet to have the opportunity for a serious race. I would agree with the automatic "cripple" that it would get, unable to drag out the gears like it should be able to. What is the rpm limit on one of those...around 8,000, right? I don't have many mod's yet, I just have some denso iridium plugs, arospeed wires, and I have a Hotshot CAI that I just ordered online, should be here by the end of the week. What do you think? My 96 SE-R would stand a chance?
ser_lover 05-05-2002, 11:23 PM There is one around here that is 6 speed. I will race it and tell you if I get my ass kicks. I would think you could take a auto though even though they said autos are better for dragging but I dunno.
Benito Malito 05-06-2002, 12:29 AM Dude you will get your ass kicked. Sorry to say, especially if he has mods too. The TRD exhaust looks stock so you cant even tell. If he has the same mods as you, or even just I/H/E, and he'll walk you good.
It's like having a VE powered Nissan. The thing is their V-tech (or whatever) sucks bad. The car is geared all wrong. You always fall off the cam when shifting even in fourth gear.
It redlines at 7800 iirc. My boy shifts at 8400, and still does not hit any cut, or fall onto the heavy cam in any upshifts. This car is in serious need of aftermarket therapy. I havent' heard of a cure for it other then F/I.
Yeah the GT is for posers unless turbo'ed
kjopi -sleeper- 05-06-2002, 11:15 AM when my car was stock it walked away from a GT-S, and that was from a roll....my car was BONE STOCK, and he had I/H/E...slow freakin car...oh...he also had a bodykit and rims....i even took a pic of the guy right before.

MarkSR20 05-06-2002, 06:58 PM I had the same experience. I raced this kid in a GT-S with H/I/E and I have cams/ECU! stock exhaust, stock header, stock intake, stock stock stock. I beat him by about 2 cars. The Celica GT-S is a top end car and I was pulling away from him in every gear. This kid could drive and was not missing gears. You will not get your ass kicked and if it is an automatic you will pull on him forever and ever!
Crono1321 05-06-2002, 08:18 PM hehehe thats great! I'm getting giddy thinking out the look on his face when he sees his $22,000+ car get beat by my SE-R. That would definately shut all the posers up at my school....arg. I think I will challenge him...I just wish I knew him personally, not from the road. Then it would be easy.

SERacer 05-06-2002, 11:29 PM My brother has a red '00 Celica GT-S 6-speed and those cars are sweet. I drive his car at least twice a week and their low end is decent (at least when you are driving alone) and the top end is unbelievable (especially now that he has an AEM CAI). I've raced my bro awhile back when i had I/H/E and I've lost to him by 2 carlengths. His was bone stock w/ less than 3k miles. Only gear I had him was 1st by about half a car, by 2nd it was over. I havent raced now that I have my 91 cam and G20 ECU (I got rid of my I/H/E :( ) ever since I got my "ticket" for being at the illegal races. :( I just have quiet mods for now because cops over here really look down on imports, especially Hondas.
Crono1321 05-07-2002, 10:53 PM Damn bro that sucks about the cops...but remember, this kid's car is an automatic, not 6-speed, that changes things. It is also 100% stock. I doubt I'll have the chance to ever race him, we only have a week of school left... :(
NismoSER 05-08-2002, 12:56 AM Automatic GT-S's are S-L-O-W. Very very slow. If the Gtech means anything at all to you, my friend has a 2001 GT-S automatic and it ran a 0-60 of 10.2 seconds....didn't even bother going to the 1/4mile.
That motor's peak power is about 1500 from redline, so it doesn't have much of an opportunity to be in its sweet spot. Now, especially with a 4 speed auto, it will hit redline maybe twice by 60mph, but by then you'll be so far ahead you could skip a gear and still probably beat him :)
BTW, in the same conditions that the auto GT-S ran the 10.2, my SE-R ran a 6.9, just for comparison's sake.
Now, go beat up on some Celica arse.
BORNGEARHEAD 05-08-2002, 01:05 AM I have smoked a quite of few of them. My roommate was looking at buying one and let me test drive it and I was not impressed. It was funny. He brought it by the dealership I worked at and I took it for a ride and the fucking accelerator stuck at like 4000 rpms. I was under the hood trying to get it to come down and it wouldn't. He called the dealership and had the salesman come pick it up.

don't our cars peak 1100 from redline???
i thought ours peaked at 64 and redlined at 75
NismoSER 05-08-2002, 08:51 AM Whoops! My bad. I meant to put 150rpm, not 1500. Then i looked it up. Peak power is made at 7600 rpm, with a redline of 7800. So, I really should have put 200rpm from redline.
Oops.
Even its torque comes in late.....after 6000 rpm.
But, one thing remains true. Go whoop on some automatic GT-S arse! :D
Crono1321 05-08-2002, 03:09 PM LoL! I want to kick some!!!! I think I'm going to talk to the kid the next time I see him and be like "yo, remember me? Yeah, wanna reclaim your spot as the "fastest car?" Yeah I thought so...you my bitch...bitch. LoL! High school is pretty funny. Just about anything that isn't a civic is below 1995, and even the 1989 corolla's have huge mufflers on them that sound like shit. Nothing annoys me more than a cheap sounding muffler, and then them revving it at me when I give them a dirty look for having a shitty sounding car. I know its not just high school, but thats where I see most of it.

99SENTRASER 05-08-2002, 03:28 PM here is yer ass. :p
MaddMatt 05-09-2002, 11:13 AM Wasn't aware GT-Ss even CAME with automatics. Thought they were likt the GS-Rs: manual only, not option for an auto. Guess I was mistaken.
Take it to the track. It's cheap and a nice, controlled environment with no dogs, kids, old ladies crossing the street.
I'd imagine the auto GT-S would be a complete slug.
