: Modifications to our cars
Crono1321 05-05-2002, 08:19 PM Hey guys, I need some info. I just bought a HotShot CAI, and I am wondering, once my next paycheck comes in I'll be looking for a new car part. Can you give me a list of mods you would do, in order, for a stock car. I already have plugs and wires, and just got a tune up around 500 miles ago. My friend says either headers or exhaust. Also, I've heard SOOOOOO much about this 1991 intake cam. How much does it help? Where can I find one? How much does one cost? Thanks for any help once again.

Jackson Diamond 05-05-2002, 08:28 PM I can get you the intake cam for 80 bucks, or get a hotshot or AEBS header.
Crono1321 05-05-2002, 08:29 PM Thats cool, but where can I find one? The intake cam I mean. Also if I get an intake cam, do I have to get a new exhaust cam? Thanks again

98SERwTricks 05-05-2002, 08:36 PM You just need the intake cam. Check SE-R.net classifieds. You could go all out and get a intake cam and a 96 G20 ECU :D
Crono1321 05-05-2002, 08:39 PM Also, I have no clue on how to even start trying installing a cam inside my head...lol you know what I mean. If I couldn't do it do you know an estimate on how much it would cost a shop to do it?
Ju§tin
98SERwTricks 05-05-2002, 08:56 PM You should really find someone in your area that is knowledgeable about SR20s. It would cost about $50 or a 6 pack if you went that route. Check out the Florida forum! BTW, what kind of plugs and wires did you use?
llaprad1 05-05-2002, 09:19 PM If youre going to get a shop to do it, go all out and get Jim Wold S3s. You'll get way more for your labor dollar.
Crono1321 05-05-2002, 11:07 PM I have Denso Iridium spark plugs, and (ugh these suck ass) arospeed wires. I regret the purchase, and am I planning on getting vitek in the future. Um, I know the JWT's would be better, but what is the price range on one of those...or a set, I suppose? Thanks again guys.

ser_lover 05-05-2002, 11:29 PM I thought the CAI helped alot. That would be my first mod.
Crono1321 05-05-2002, 11:43 PM Cool, but I already bought that! What NEXT? The intake cam? Although once again, I heard they were hard to install, and I'm not the best mechanic in the world...not even close. Consider me a novice who needs the book by his side at all times. Put me right above my mom. LoL maybe thats an exaggeration, my mom can't even adjust the steering wheel w/out my help.

Benito Malito 05-06-2002, 12:14 AM Next Mod: Replace aftermarket wires with stock. No for real, the cam is cheapest. You can order it from Courtesy Nissan or buy Diamond's.
Also it's a good time to order the Factory service manual, or a cheapo haynes. This makes the cam install easier.
Getting a set of install notes will help too
A header will get the best results in terms of hp per mod, but can be more expensive even used.
Shnoopz 05-06-2002, 12:32 AM Dude...
I just had my 91 intake cam put on in the past month or so... I (like you) wasnt completely comfortable doing the install myself so i paid my neighbor who has done a lot of mechanic work on friends and my parents cars... but instead of just having him install it i asked that he have me participate. So, I got some experience... and I personally am damn glad I didnt attempt to do it myself or i woulda been in a world of hurt, but then again i know nothing about our engines other than that im glad my car is powered by it :D
But id say if you can get the intake cam cheap go for it,i got mineshipped for $65....
good luck
Ben
especse_r 05-07-2002, 08:14 PM Start building your suspension. Drop your car, new struts and you will have a good ass handling. I forgot to mention Front and Rear Strut bars.
ser_lover 05-07-2002, 09:10 PM I couldnt tell you about the cam thing cause I have yeat to do it my self. Thats my next mod. I would get an greddy exhaust. My second mod or suspension cause I couldnt stand my car without it.
tg200ser 05-07-2002, 09:42 PM I am in the same situtation with the cams. I dont know enough to want to attempt it myself and i dont know anyone around here that knows anything about sr20's. I went to my local AUTO GO and they gave me an estimate of 4 hours and $200 in labor. I dont know what to do. How much could i screw up if i attempted to do the cam swap myself??
Jackson Diamond 05-07-2002, 10:26 PM Guys the cam swap is not hard, i put my JWT S4 cams in not knowing what to expect, just go buy the factory service manual at your dealer and it will tell you everything. If you still dont feel safe call Jim Wolf Tech. and ask them to fax you the cam swap instructions, it shows everything you need to do and has pics.
Have faith in yourself!!!
Crono1321 05-07-2002, 10:59 PM Hey I think I'm going to go with the 91 cam. Yeah I heard the same thing about getting it professionally installed...around 200-300 for labor, since it takes so long. I also heard something rather disconcerning. I heard that if you swap out your intake cam, you have to reprogram your ecu. Is this true?
Ju§tin
Jackson Diamond 05-07-2002, 11:10 PM NO, you wont make top performing Hp but its not nesessary, i ran the JWT S4 cams for about 1 1/2 months without a reprogramed ecu. You should have no problems.
