Mechanic wants $735 to replace an EGR valve, tube, and control arm. I havent been able to call nissan to price OEM parts, but I think this is a little high. Is this guy crazy, or is this reasonable? Any comments please!!!

Sounds a bit high. It's not a hard job to do. What happens to this nasty little EGR system is carbon builds up from the exhaust gasses thus making the EGR valve stick. Mine stuck open. The down side to this archaic system is it causes the throttle body to stick and produces more carbon on the plugs (personal experience). From new my car barely passed emissions, so I tried a bunch of stuff and found that when the EGR system was temporarily ;) disabled, my car would fly through emissions with no problem. I'm not suggesting you do this as it is illegal, I'm jut relaying my fight with the EGR system. Now where did I put my system, hmmmmm? ;)

I took mine off and cleaned it. It builds up with carbon, not allowing it to fluctuate properly.

Yup. Just clean the thing 1st and see if that solves your problem before you start shelling out those kind of bucks. I could buy a JDM 10:1 engine for less then what this guy quoted you on the EGR. Good trick might be to go to the junk yard and get a second one. Just keep cleaning and rotating them. Oops, I think I just kicked my EGR valve accross the room. :) Hey, it works now. :D

You don't list what type and year car you have but assuming its a B13, getting the three items you listed will cost about $250 plus shipping from an online discount Nissan dealer. The EGR stuff you can do yourself in less than an hour.

The control arm will be more involved if you don't have a lift and have never done it before but not too bad. I'd buy the parts online, unless you have a local dealer who will give you a 25% discount, and install the EGR stuff yourself. If you have to, pay the dealer for the control arm install and save money.
