: NEW COMPLETELY ROUND CAMS!!!
Dudeman258 11-30-2006, 07:37 PM Heya.
Well. Myself and Zeek are working on Zeek's new 92 se-r. We were unable to figure out what ws wrong with the old engine, we only spent a few hours looking it over, before we began to pull the engine. Well. I was in my gerage the other day with Zeek, when I decided to pull the valve cover off the old engine. I think the photos speak for themselve's. Well im wondering if the bad intake cams, could damage the other parts of the valve train? The oil holes over the two middle cams appeared clogged. As well as the cams had flat spots on them, and the lobes were almost completely ground down, with grooves and everything, but no pitting. Can we throw on some good cams and asssume the engine will run ok? Just wondering if we cold keep it around and run it again, or even consider selling it? And also, as always overall impressions are welcomed! Thanks all.

McCoy 11-30-2006, 07:42 PM I'd get a new set of cams and rockers and run it. I can see wear on your exhaust cams also and who knows how much material is gone from the rocker pads . I'd just make sure to clean out those cam oiling tubes... really good. I've had this happen before and the car has now been on the road for 3 years with a new owner, and still running.
And if you interested, I have a good set of 91 cams and all the rockers from a motor I tore down a few months back that are just sitting in the garage ;)
jacen99SE 11-30-2006, 08:43 PM even with new cam oiling tubes, cams, and rockers, I wonder if the metal wearing off the cams/rockers did any damage to other parts of the engine.
RedDragun 11-30-2006, 09:10 PM I'd pull the motor out and take it apart and check everything. Might as well.
XxToKeSxX 11-30-2006, 09:17 PM Cot damn... wasn't his Valve Train noisy? the squirters must have been clogged for months.
If you do run it again, I agree w/ McCoy... also take the squirters out and clean them, or see if you can source some lowport squirters...
I have some, and I don't need them anymore ;)
SuperblkStalion 11-30-2006, 10:37 PM if i buy your cams will they be an upgrade? i bet they are way better than C cams. anywhoo, when and if you do clean the oil squirter things why not drill the holes out a bit to avoid this from happening again.

Drilling the holes out, makes matters worse. When you drill the holes bigger, you create a small wall around the hole, and that blocks oil flow.
True that.. drilling is a bad idea. The hold diameter is engineered to create a set amount of oil pressure. Changing the diameter of the squirter tube with out changing the diameter of the feed hole to the tube might make matters worse.
I have pics of the new vs old tube design. New tubes are on the left in both pictures.

As you can see they not only made the outlet hole sizes bigger but at the same time they made the feed for the bar smaller. My guess is they did this to equalize the pressure drop in the head while making the squirter hole size bigger so it would not clog over time.

McCoy 12-01-2006, 01:56 PM Dental pick and carb cleaner is what I used to get the oil feed tubes cleaned out.
nissansr20nx 12-01-2006, 03:00 PM Yeah that is what I used as well. I cant believe you guys didnt pull the VC off while the motor was in the car. I wouldnt waste my time trying to fix that motor and then having to install it with a HOPE that it will run. I would order up a JDM de motor with a warranty!

Exactly, get a new engine. I'm not surprise at the condition of the cam. Obviously, the engine has been neglected (no oil change for how long).

well i'm glad i never did that to my ride then. my bluebird motor wa way cleaner when i got it than my old stock motor.
McCoy 12-01-2006, 05:01 PM If the motor is out of the car, then I suggest you get a new motor. If it's mostly in the car, doesn't sound like it is, then swap the cams and run it.
Dudeman258 12-01-2006, 08:38 PM Good info guys!
Well yea, the motor is out of the car. Just whished we had realized this BEFORE, so we could have put new cams in and just ran it until it blew a hole through the block. O well. And yea, we are in the process of swapping it with another cheap USDM we picked up. We are just getting the car running so during the summer my friend can go JDM/turbo (maybe). But this all makes me wonder about those cam squirters for my 91 highport...hey Tokes..want to PM with an offer??? :biggthump Good discussion folks. So what should we do with the engine?? Im trying to see how much we can source out, if we decide to sell it. But I also kinda want to keep it incase my de blows, and then I can throw that in as a back-up engine..?
