I bought 4 ES motor mounts. I installed the front and back mount. That was a lot of fun!!! I only have two left, Driver and Passenger side. The driver looks like it just slides in the recesses of the oem mount. The passenger obviosly needs to have to oem mount removed. Is there a metal sleeve that needs to be pressed out? Can I just burn/cut the old one out? I am also getting the control arm bushings and will be pressing them out. If I need a press I will just do this all at once.

Thanks for your ideas.

yes. you definately need a press for the passenger side mount and for the control arm bushings. The drivers side mount you can have out and back in in less than an hour, real simple. I just did the rear control arm bushings-what a bitch!!! Although I did it with hand tools, I would highly recommend an impact gun!

Steve,
having just gone through the entire ordeal of mount replacement I can say that you can safely (though carefully) cut the old internals of the passenger side mount. You will notice that you have to cut the black soft stuff AND the metal sleeve that is pressed into the aluminum external case. The metal sleeve actually sits flat on the aluminum and the protrusion in the middle is all metal.

What another list member suggested and worked for me is cutting a small (~1 inch) wide slice from the metal sleeve, taking it out and then the remaining part will easily come out with judicious hitting around its edge.

I was reluctant to go the hydraulic press-out way since someone mentioned a broken case during this procedure so I took my time and cut through it in about 2 hours.

Thanks, It seems that I have two decent options. It all depends on how lazy I feel I guess.

I just picked up my ES MM today (part # 7.1105) and paid only $50 CAN. After the exchange rate that comes to about $32 US. Not a bad deal!!! I'll be putting them in within the next couple of weeks.

BTW 98sr20de since you installed the front and rear, any advice to install the front and rear MM? The front looks to be a 10 min job, but the back looks a little more time consuming? TIA

The front wasn't as easy as that but it wasn't that hard. Pushing the old housings out and pushing the ES mounts into the old housing takes some work. Just don't try to do it with the metal in the bushing. The rear is a pain. A vice to squeze it into the bushing would help. Also having a helper would really be nice. I did it alone and was getting very tired. Eventually used a jack to push the mount and engine support up to get the bolt to line up. I think it was just persitance at this point. Good Luck.

I am now struggling to get that rear one to line up. Last night I was in the garage til 3 in the morning and replaced the steering rack bushings, motor mount bushings and shifter bushing. That rear son of a bitch just wont line up!!! My dad keeps bitching at me that i dont knowthe first thing about cars and that modufying them is a waste of time etc. which does not help me in theis frustrating situation. Hopefully you guys will have better luck than me!

Try jacking the mount up past the hole just a little. That is what worked for me.

If you have access to a grinder, taper the end of the bolt slightly and use a wire wheel to wipe away the burs.

Then when the bolt has made it through a little bit of the far hole, you can tap it with a hammer to get the threads started and it will align itself.

It's my birthday and as a present I bought a nice vice. Used said vice to cut out the old metal flange inside the passenger side mount. I now have 4 ES mounts on my car. The driver mount was easy and so was the passenger once I got the old mount out. I will tell you that the engine doesn't move much with the four mounts in there. My steering wheel shakes up and down now at idle. No problems with wheel hop but now I have so much ability to put the power down that my clutch slipped big time the first time I tried to launch from 3000rpm. Oh well.

i finally got them in after many hoursd of struggling. I had to rig up a system of hose clamps one around the x-member, one around an engine bracket istself, so when i tightened the clamps, it came together just enough to slide the bolt through. ya you're right that motor ain't goin' nowheres. I noticed a vibration on both sides of the window wehre it meetsthe t top but that was just revving it with no load, its still on jackstands :(

I'm glad you got it in. We should start an ES bushing support group. The suspension ones on a B13 are a PITA also.

My stearing wheel doesn't shake as much as day 1 but it still vibrates at idle. I will try to raise my idle some. The VE idles so smooth that it may not be an issue when I get that engine in my car soon.

I'm glad you got em in and next time your dad gets on your case tell him to shut his pie hole. How else are you going to learn anything if you don't actually do it? Ok then that's what i thought. :) Maybe you shouldn't actually tell him to shut his pie hole since you still live with him. Wait till you move out. :)
