Well there I was minding my own buisness, when a Eclipse GS-T decided to try and give me a run. Well nailed 1st, 2nd, 3rd.... SNAP!! GRRRRRRR..... There went my tranny... Damn this really sucks. I was hoping I would be an exception to the rule. Guess not. So now the hunt starts for a new gearbox. So I don't think that the case is cracked. I'm pretty sure 3rd is just gone. I drove it about 2 miles to my house. Didn't sound pretty but it made it. So oh great Nissan guru's where do I go from here..? Perfect ending to my week...

man...you're makin' me skerd...time to get another tranny along w/ my new flywheel and clutch setup to build up on the side...I can't not have a car :( Gotta be prepared in the event, and the fact that this tranny has 145K miles on it w/ boost skers me even more :-D :-\

It's often been reported that 3rd gear in the SE-Rs are the weak link when you have a forced induction system.

if the tranny gears and such are crogenically treated, does that seem to alleviate the vast majority of gear problems?

Is it possible that the 18" wheels put too much stress on tranny?

To sum it up. High HP and our trannies don't mix well. You can do a few things to help a little but if you're putting up big numbers it's going to happen sooner or later. I blew mine running all motor. 150hp.

Yeah bigger wheels do put more of a strain on the tranny. But I had a feeling it was going to eat it soon anyhow. So anyone want some 18's?

I agree with you on this one but I just want to let people know it could happen all motor. I broke my 3rd gear all motor (only bolt-ons) and Matt did as well. It sucks that our trannies are prone to these problems. I am on my 3rd tranny!!! :(

Come on gang lets get together and find Matt a good tranny for a decent price!! Pm Matt4Nissan if you can help!!!

I feel your pain my friend! :(

Once upon a time, Mike Kojima mentioned something about using a Maxima tranny, however, I'm not sure if that was just for B15s or if this would work with the more mature SR20DEs. Supposedly the Maxima's tranny is built stronger and can handle more load than our stock trannys, but whether this will work for us is unknown to me.

Well I didn't break my tranny but I broke my clutch. Was coming home from taking my ASE tests and stopped at a light. Went to put her back in gear but it wouldn't budge. Jacked the car up on the side of the road and checked the linkage. Linkage was fine. Damn clutch only had about 60k on it, surely it couldn't have broken already. Sure enough when I took the trans out the next day at work the damn clutch disc was broken near one of the springs. I called the Nissan dealer just for kicks (I expected an obnoxios price) when they told me they had a brand new clutch kit for $125 list and $100 with my discount I was like damn I'll be right over. Well the install went pretty good, but now my speedo is inop (I think I pulled too hard on the wires trying to disconnect the sensor) and I guess when I tried to drive the car home by matching revs and forcing it into gear I fucked up second gear. Can't shift into 2nd real fast anymore without it grinding like hell. Oh well I can deal with that for now. At least my trannys ok for the most part.

Ok so I think I've found another tranny.. Now here goes the current situation. I just got in my car to see if by some chance it could be driven. NOPE! I went to put it in reverse and it felt as if it went in, but as I let the clutch out it didn't move at all. It seemed as if something was stuck. So I tried putting it into 1st, felt as if it went in. Let the clutch out same thing. Seemed like it wanted to move but there was something stuck. So then I tried to get it back in Reverse. NO GOOD. I can't get it into any gear now, and when I let the clutch out it sounds like one of those childrens popcorn lawnmower. (don't ask my why I thought of this) It's just like a bunch of crap flying around inside. The car runs like a champ though. Still nice and strong. I revved it a few times just to make me happy, shut it down and went back to moping. Any ideas?

Yeah I'd hate to buy an earlier year tranny, and get 5th gear pop out though

One of the solutions to avoid breaking 3rd gear is to shift softly and not at redline from 2nd to 3rd, not really logical if you're racing, though.

Yeah I guess if I was boosting that would be easier to do. By the time I hit second any of the cars that are around here would be waaay back.

Bro, if i were you i would stay away from that 100 dollar clutch kit. My boy nismoser bought one of those nissan clutch kits for 100 bucks and he just blew his clutch the other day....with maybe 10k of use on the clutch it blew. He is now going with the jwt pressure plate and stock disc. I just dont want to see that one blow on you, it seems to be cheap for a reason. And matt, im sorry to hear about your loss bro, did * now put the clutch in all the way before you shifted?? just curious as to how it snapped on you.
