I own a GTIR in the UK and as any owners in the US will know, the gearboxes are crap.especially if you up the power.Basically,I'm trying to guage interest in the US on an uprated gearset from PAR,an Australian firm that makes very tough gearboxes(currently used in the top 5 4x4 1/4 mile cars there, unfortunately all imprezas getting times in the 10s)
The gearsets aren't cheap at $4200 Australian which is about£1500 but I'm looking at £880 for a recon standard one that will probably break after some abuse,so I'd rather pay more and not have to replace it again.
Hopefully,if I can get enough people interested then PAR will give a discount.Further info on the company can be found on.

So you are the guy I've seen on the GTi-R list. The gearset changes look interesting, but I wonder if they actually bolt into our FWD cases. Not very many ATTESAs roaming wild in North America...

The gears he's talking about are very interesting, to say the least:Solution - 'R strips gears (http://gtiroc.com/testgtirochelp2.htm)I hear that this isn't the current generation, but it'll give you an idea of what's different. :)

A GB pound is a 1.50 in American currency which is 2250, that is still cheaper then the 3000 kit that was never made from quaife. FYI

Good luck to the GTi-R guys on getting uprated gears made, but unfortunately us SE-R guys can't use the gearsets made for your transmission.... we have a weaker transmission that you guys do... stepping up to the weak stock GTi-R tranny would be an upgrade for us :-(

Had a look at the par gear set up in hitec last week as it finaly turned up for lex,The gears look ok but the teeth are only cut at about 20 degress and this could bet the week point, the quaife is at about 30degrees.I see the first and second gears are dog clutchs, thats a bitch to drive in town and it hard on other bit of the car.Do we know any one here who has one and wats it like to drive. My quaife has gone again thats no 5 now.Quife has built it thenselves 3 times.I think i need JUN box, more bloddy money

actually, a straighter cut gear would be stronger, just a whole lot noisier.

you dont want straight cut gears in 4th and 5th because the faster you go, the louder they get until your ears pop.

The first PAR gearset is here in the states as of last week, but it will be a little while until it is installed. Mike told me third is way larger than even the largest stock gear. The price is going to be more like 3500 US $ . I'll try to get some pics of it soon.

sounds like money that is well spent. Don't have to worry about blowing 3rd gear up.

aren't these gears dog gears? I thought the guy at Par had said he sold a couple sets already to the states. Not a street application solution to our problem of shite arse gears

i personally talked to ivan and he told me it the price would remain around 2100. also, he said that the sets would be streetable "with practice"

yeah, they're dog gears - it just depends on how dedicated you are to determine if they are 'streetable' :) hehe. Price? Well I was just relaying info from a friend who got them last week. The projected price a while ago may have been 2100, but I don't know if/how much it has risen during development. The guys at PAR spent a significant amount of time developing the first FWD gearset, so they may be making up the R&D time; as well, the price may drop some if there are more than one set ordered at a time.

here is a quote from ivan @ PAR
"The FWD SR20DE full dog box is the thing to have when you have turboed the N/A SR20DE or have installed a U12 Bluebird/U13 Bluebird/GTi-R turbo engine into your FWD Pulsar, Sentra, SE-R, NX Coupe (or anything with a FWD SR20DE). The dog gearset is made from EN36A case hardening alloy steel which is hardened and tempered through a special heat treatment process after the manufacturing stage. This is a dog (1st to 4th gear) gearset with straight cut gears and will handle all the power your engine can supply. The dog gears are rated at around 600hp."
